‘The Fighter’ Director David O. Russell Dumps ‘Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune’ Movie

The Movie God   |  @   |

One of the joys of writing about movie news is that you can cover something and the storylines that come it a significant amount of times, and then find out that none of it really mattered, as if it were all just a dream. But in this case, discovering that it was all a dream (or nightmare, in some cases) is something that most fans will welcome with open arms.

Deadline is reporting that David O. Russell, the director behind the Oscar-winning boxing drama, The Fighter, has decided to leave the movie adaptation of the hit video game, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Russell had been attached to direct the movie for a long while, and as mentioned above, many strange twists came of his time with the project. The most notable of which was when his Fighter star Mark Wahlberg revealed that he was going to play Nathan Drake in the movie, which set fans of the game into a enraged frenzy.

The majority of people (including myself) though Nathan Fillion was easily the most obvious and perfect choice for the part, but Russell didn’t even know who he was. Others had plenty of suggestions of their own for the role, but it was clear that Wahlberg would have been a disastrously bad decision.

And it didn’t stop there, either””Russell went on to say he wanted to add a family element to the story with Drake’s father and uncle coming into the picture even though they had no part in the game. Actors expected to play these roles were Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci…without doubt the most unexcited movie fans have ever been about hearing De Niro and Pesci might be involved in a movie.

So now, my dear friends, after all of that, we’re left right back where we started. Sony Pictures is currently looking for a new writer to rewrite the script, and now begins the search for the director that will take over for Russell and hopefully be just a little bit more knowledgeable in the actual game for which the movie is based.

While we wait for further news on the movie, who would you the fans want to see sitting in the director’s chair? Obviously someone with a pre-existing relationship of Mr. Fillion would be appreciated, but it would also very much help to find someone with a strong knack for both the action/adventure genre and a good grasp on comedy as well.

Here’s your chance to make a wishlist. Go!

Obviously you already have someone in mind… and by your description, the same person who has a knack for both action/adventure and comedy … So I’ll go ahead and say it… Joss Wheden would be pefect for something like this… I’d love to see his take on a video game adaptation, given his experience in comics and movies/tv.

  2. does this even need to be argued? Set Steven Spielsburg on that chair. At least he’ll listen to Fan reccomendations!

  4. Thank God!!! O. Russell isn’t the right man for this job. He is more talented than adapting a video game to the screen.

  5. Joss would be perfect, but I think he should concentrate on making The Avengers all that it should be first.
