Looks like the wrong Mexican is about to fucked with again.
It was nearly two years ago when fiercely independent filmmaker Robert Rodriguez turned his fake Grindhouse trailer Machete into a full-blown feature film top-loaded with gratuitous female nudity, gleefully gory comic book action, and an absurd all-star cast including Robert DeNiro, Don Johnson, Lindsay Lohan, and Cheech Marin. The entire concept of Machete was built around legendary tough guy character actor Danny Trejo, who reprised the title role that has elevated him to the status of an action icon in Rodriguez’s 2010 B-movie epic that grossed $44 million globally from a $10.5 million budget and did excellent business on DVD and Blu-ray.
At the end of Machete a narrator promised further adventures of the meanest and most resourceful Federale to ever grace our borders, and it looks like the first of those promised follow-ups will be headed our way soon. Deadline is reporting that Rodriguez and Trejo are re-teaming for Machete Kills, which will be the director’s next film.
“The fan response to the Machete character has been fanatical since his first appearance,” Rodriguez said. “Machete is truly a super hero and Machete Kills will be bigger and more ambitious than the first time.”
Machete Kills will be financed by Alexander Rodnyansky, who will also produce the movie with Rodriguez, Aaron Kaufman and Iliana Nikolic of Quick Draw Productions, and Sergei Bespalov and Rick Schwartz. The script is being written by Kyle Ward, whose most notable past credit is a screen adaptation of the Kane & Lynch video game set to star Bruce Willis and Jamie Foxx, from an idea by Rodriguez and his brother Marcel, who also previously collaborated on the screenplay for The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D.
The plot of Machete Kills, according to Deadline:
“The new film finds Machete recruited by the U.S. Government for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way through Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on an army in an effort to dismantle a plan for global anarchy.”
Machete Kills is rumored to be going into production this April. Filming will most likely take place at Rodriguez’s Austin, Texas-based Troublemaker Studios.
