Kick-Ass

Wondering when we might see a sequel to the ultra-popular comic book movie, Kick-Ass? According to comic creator Mark Millar, it’s coming soon.

Millar spoke with Scotland’s Daily Record recently, and shared updates on where numerous projects currently stand in the Hollywood machine, including Kick-Ass 2, which he says will film this summer along with another work of his, American Jesus.

He began by chatting about everything from his quiet lifestyle and his “J.K. Rowling approach” to writing (write it and move on; if someone wants to make it into a movie, they can come to him in Scotland or London and chat), to his constant declining of Hollywood offers in order to focus only on his own properties and his reboot of many Marvel superheroes a decade ago that led to a revival in popularity and the many massive movies being made about them today.

Next Millar got to his own works and where the movies currently stand. He started with Superior, the story of a 12-year-old boy with multiple sclerosis who also happens to be a superhero. That comic is due out soon, with oft-collaborator Matthew Vaughn attached to help deliver a movie version sometime in 2014. He also mentioned Supercrooks—described as the X-Men meet Ocean’s Eleven—but no release window is known yet.

This is where he mentions the Kick-Ass sequel in passing, saying “We shoot Kick-Ass 2 and American Jesus this summer. Then Matthew [Vaughn] and I have Secret Service, which is a neddy James Bond.”

No further details about Kick-Ass 2 other than that—a simple side note to be shared.

American Jesus is a movie Millar claims he wants to be “beautiful” as opposed to his normal approach, which is sometimes considered to be disrespectful to certain subject matters.

He describes it, saying:

A film about the returned Jesus Christ has amazing artistic potential. Jesus shows up in the middle of the financial crisis, America is in turmoil and the Eurozone is collapsing. They are quite apocalyptic times that we are living in with the gap between rich and poor.

It is the reverse of The Omen, which is about a kid who finds out he is the anti-Christ. This is a kid who finds out he is Jesus Christ.

As for Secret Service, he describes it as My Fair Lady meets James Bond, and it will be about a a London rioter who’s chosen by MI6 to become a spy due to the fact that he’s disposable. Millar says that he’s halfway done with the comic, and he and Vaughn are halfway done with the script.

Lastly, Millar has something called Jupiter’s Children. He sees the hopeful movie franchise—based on the upcoming comic he’s working on with artist Frank Quitely—as becoming the biggest science fiction franchise since a little something called Star Wars. It’s said to be an “intergalactic saga that traverses both space and time.”

Now, whether Kick-Ass 2 or any of these projects get made in the time frames that have been mentioned here or if they live up to Millar’s expectations of them remains to be seen. From the sounds of them we as movie and comic fans can only hope that’s the case, but perhaps he’s just incredibly excited about what’s to come regarding his work.

And why shouldn’t he be? The man gets to hang out in Scotland and write original comics and movie scripts based on them. We should all be so very lucky!
