I’ve been reading comics for a while and I am always on the lookout for something new, and that is exactly what I got with Prophet #23. Prophet is an insanely cool comic book series that features a warrior who wakes up in a strange future filled with wondrous creatures. His mission? To restart a bunch of satellites that will put the human race back into action. All he has to complete his mission is a knife, a floating robot translator, and a strange piece of clothing that adapts to his every need, even if that need is a new arm. The last two issues have introduced us to the world of Prophet, and with this issue, we start to see the bigger picture of what is going on in this series.

Writers Brandon Graham and Simon Roy have brought a unique book to the comic stands. The new Prophet is not the same book that originally launched back in the ’90s from Rob Liefeld’s Extreme Studio. When the series re-launched with issue 21, it was basically a brand new series. These last three issues have just been amazingly cool. So far we’ve gotten tons of great moments with alien caravans and the finer points of the laws of succession, not to mention a bunch of fights against all manner of aliens and monsters. You may have seen post-apocalyptic landscapes before, but you’ve never seen anything like this before.

The otherworldly feel of the book is greatly enhanced by Roy’s art. Roy’s work has an indie sensibility to it that is a perfect fit for the story. His art reminds me of Geof Darrow, in that they both pile on the details. Roy’s art gives life to the lived in world of Prophet. Every detail has a reason for being there and it leads into the creation of a fully realized world. Everything that you need to know about the world is there on the page.

I know the numbering on this series can be a little confusing. Go out, pick up issue 21, 22 , and now 23 and catch up on what I hope is a very long story, because after the end of this issue, I just want to know what happens from here. Prophet #23 gets a very solid 5 out of 5. This is science fiction done to perfection.

  1. I totally agree!! It’s been quite an inspirational find and makes me want to continue my occasional drive towards illustrating comics. Others I’ve been enjoying recently also include Orc Stain (Image also), Spaceman (Vertigo) and King City (Tokyo Pop) which has just been released as a fat onezee ;) Check em out fow show mayn!!
