Barring any late mega-surges, it doesn’t appear that Marvel’s juggernaut The Avengers will pass James Cameron’s Avatar as the all-time biggest box office success. It will, however, do something only two other movies have been able to do: pass $600 million domestically.
For the longest time, Cameron’s other record-breaker, Titanic, sat untouched at the top of the mountain at just over $600 million (with an additional almost $58 million added after its recent 3D re-release). Then came Avatar, slaughtering every record in its path en route to a stunning $749 million domestic haul (with an additional $30 million or so tacked on with a special edition re-release, bringing it to over $2.7 billion worldwide).
Now The Avengers will join the most exclusive of all clubs, becoming only the third film to cross the $600 million domestic mark. Worldwide, the movie is now at $1.4 billion, also making it the third highest grossing film of all time globally.
The only other movie ever made that has come close to joining the club is The Dark Knight, which reached $533 million back in 2008 before disappearing from theaters. Can The Dark Knight Rises make a run?
Another interesting point to keep in mind is length of time in theaters. Titanic and Avatar, for the best examples, spent nearly a YEAR (with re-releases) in theaters to amass their respective fortunes. The Dark Knight spent about seven months in theaters. The Avengers, on the other hand, hasn’t even been out for two months yet.
So, if producers so choose, they could let it hang out for a while and see what happens, or even do that 3-hour director’s cut re-release.
Then again, you can already pre-order the movie, so perhaps they plan to be in and out of theaters and into your home as quickly as possible.
