Recently it was revealed that a sequel to this writer’s personal favorite Disney*Pixar movie, Finding Nemo, was on the way with original director Andrew Stanton locked in to return to what’s currently known simply as Finding Nemo 2, and Ellen Degeneres the first star to sign on for another trip into the Deep Blue.
Stanton recently stepped outside of the family of geniuses over at Pixar in order to make his live-action feature debut, John Carter, for Disney. The movie was considered by many to be a decent popcorn flick, but, for numerous reasons, it would become one of the biggest box office flops of all time, costing over $250 million and only making $73 million domestically ($282.7 million worldwide).
Because of this unfortunate result, a sequel to the movie was scrapped, moving Nemo 2 to the top of Stanton’s list.
Speaking to the LA Times, Stanton touched on the failure of John Carter for the first time since it happened, and how it led to Finding Nemo 2 being next.
Stanton said:
What was immediately on the list was writing a second ‘Carter’ movie. When that went away, everything slid up. I know I’ll be accused by more sarcastic people that it’s a reaction to ‘Carter’ not doing well, but only in its timing, but not in its conceit.”
It’s never enjoyable to see a filmmaker you love have something like this happen to them. You always want the people you respect and appreciate to do well, opening doors and the freedom to more great things.
Thankfully, given his resume over at Pixar—the man has directed two of the biggest movies of all time in Nemo (28th all-time worldwide) and WALL-E (95th all-time), won an Oscar for each of them, and worked on most of the animation studios’ best titles in one form or another—he doesn’t have to go into hiding for too long before getting another go of it.
Hopefully, returning to a world he’s truly comfortable in, Stanton will quickly escape from the looming John Carter shadow and get back to doing what he does best.

what a shame… john carter was a great movie…i think it had bad reviews before it even was released… thanks to the critics for destroying this one.. i have not met one person who saw this movie that didn’t love it..

Or hopefully after Finding Nemo 2 Andrew Stanton will be able to shoot John Carter 2! Number 1 is a great movie, that hopefully will have enough legs to warrant a sequel.
