Rumor For Your Thoughts: Could Viggo Mortensen Be Playing Dr. Strange In ‘Thor 2’?

Rumors are always fun. Sometimes they turn into something, sometimes they prove to be nothing at all. Today comes an intriguing little rumor (or rumors) involving the Marvel universe, but it’s not one that’s been created out of nowhere. This one might just have a bit of backing.

According to Roger Wardell, who’s been sharing supposed insider Marvel bits via Twitter—many of which have turned out to be accurate or make plenty of sense—Marvel is in negotiations with Viggo Mortensen for an unspecified role in one of their “Phase 2” movies, which are the group of films that will lead to The Avengers 2. He later stated somewhat cryptically that there is something “Strange” about Thor 2, which is titled Thor: The Dark World, possibly indicating the inclusion of a one Dr. Strange.

The two messages have led some to believe that Mortensen may have been in talks to take on the role of Dr. Strange in Thor 2, which will lead to an expected Dr. Strange movie sometime down the road.

They could also be two separate rumors, with Viggo being in talks for another role. Or they could both be completely false, as they were first tweeted out in August and nothing has been more officially reported since then. Even if they end up being true, we could ultimately see another actor show up in the role.

Still, we do know a Dr. Strange movie is being developed—or was being developed at one time—and few would be better for the role than the great Viggo Mortensen, so it would be exciting to see it confirmed at some point.

Would you want to see Viggo Mortensen as Dr. Strange in Thor 2 and his own standalone movie? If not, who do you think needs to play Strange?

  2. What’s Hugh Laurie doing now that he’s no longer attached to the Robocop remake? Seriously, it’d just be House with two good legs fighting demons, demigods and some form of magical addiction.

  3. Johnny Depp would be a more idealistic choice for Doctor Strange than Viggo Mortensen in my opinon. He’ll bring with him the acting supremacy and a large legion of fans like Robert Downey Jr is to Iron Man.

Depp even has the look, aura and personality to match.

  4. Dr. Strange shouldn’t be included in the Avengers franchise. While he’s an interesting character and Viggo could do him justice, his power overshadows the rest of the Avengers.

  5. Can’t argue with an opinion, even a bad one, but Johnny Depp would be the worst thing to ever happen to Dr. Strange.
