It’s that time of the year, where all of us movie geeks, go through our lists and lists of movies to make that final decision as to what our favorite movies are.

I know I am fairly new to the Geeks of Doom family, and some of you may not know too much about me. To give you a little look into my thinking, I am going to include what made my top three movies for the past few years.

With all of that said, be sure to continue reading to check out my top 10 films of 2012 now!

First, as promised, my top three from the past few years:

— 2008: Wall-E, Slumdog Millionaire, Son of Rambow

— 2009: Up in the Air, Up, The Girlfriend Experience

— 2010: Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Toy Story 3, Inception

— 2011: Hugo, Attack the Block, Drive

And you can see that Pixar and me have a great relationship, although the last few movies, while good, were just not the greatest I am used to.

In 2012, it seems that I roughly saw about 71 new movies, and by new, that includes any movie for which it was my first viewing. So the easiest and first cut, as I whittle down my list, is to get rid of the older movies. After that is when things get serious, and this year seemed to be pretty easy, until I got to ten films, and then came the tough part, putting them in order.

At the halfway point in the year, my #1 was Moonrise Kingdom, and it’s time to see if it is still the cream of the crop for 2012. I do also need to point out that I have missed out on seeing a few of the bigger movies that recently came out, although from what I hear, nothing that would have most likely made my top ten.

I have included a little info about each movie, and the trailer for you to check out. So instead of rambling on why I thought it deserved to be in my top ten, I gave a condensed review. It always sucks going into a movie after reading someone rambling on about how amazing the film is. Those are high expectations to fill.

Not all of these movies will appeal to everyone, but the main reason I loved making this list, is for the hope that you will give these movies a watch, maybe they will blow your minds, or maybe you will think I am crazy. Either way, you can say that you saw them.

10. Friends with Kids “” Directed and Written by Jennifer Westfeldt

Great ensemble cast, and a story about love and friendship, with some heart. Some what predictable, but still enjoy the journey. One of the most awkward dinner parties ever. Plus you have Megan Fox, being Megan Fox, and that is always appreciated.

9. Bully “” Directed by Lee Hirsch

Been lots of talk about this movie and the movement, it’s an issue that there doesn’t seem to be an answer to solve the problem. Watch and let the discussion begin…

8. Looper “” Written and Directed by Rian Johnson

Just one of the many time travel movies that seemed to impress me. Great story and cast. If you can still check it out in theaters, download theater commentary and give it a listen. Are you a fan of science fiction? How about westerns? Or if you have seen Akira, there is something in this movie for you. And this is another example of kid actors, really showing they can act, see #1 movie and also Beasts of the Southern Wild.

7. The Raid: Redemption “” Written and Directed by Gareth Evans

Slow start to this action movie, but when it gets going, it really gets going. Some amazing fight sequences and a story that we could do without. We are simple, just give us some great martial arts and we are good.

6. Jeff, Who Lives at Home “” Written and Directed by Jay and Mark Duplass

Just one of the few times that a Duplass brother will be brought up on this list. If you haven’t checked out their other work, do yourself a favor and do that now. Another film with a great cast, and a story that delves into destiny and one man’s love for Signs, the movie.

5. Compliance “” Written and Directed by Craig Zobel

This is one of the movies that will stick with you after watching it. It’s based on real events and you just wonder how far would you have gone in her shoes. Its going to make you uncomfortable and question society, but I still think it’s worth a viewing.

4. Safety Not Guaranteed “” Directed by Colin Trevorrow

Another time travel movie, and let’s throw in Mark Duplass. I hope this is enough to make sure that Aubrey Plaza gets more starring roles in the future. And if you need more Mark Duplass in your day, might I suggest Your Sister’s Sister, one that just missed out on making my top ten this year.

3. Ruby Sparks “” Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris

Written by Zoe Kazan, who stars as Ruby Sparks. Starring real life couple Paul Dano and Zoe. Some really powerful and emotional parts, great indie soundtrack. If you had control over a person, where do you draw the line, and what will you learn about yourself during the process.

2. Sound of My Voice “” Directed by Zal Batmanglij

Co-written by Brit Marling, and she also stars as Maggie, a self proclaimed time traveler, who pretty much puts you under a spell from the first time you see her on camera. If you haven’t seen Another Earth yet, these would make a great double feature.

1. Moonrise Kingdom “” Directed and co-written by Wes Anderson

Wes Anderson has been hit or miss with me. Loved Bottle Rocket, and this one ranked up there with that one. A great story about love, and a great cast, which you always get with his movies. And even though the kids are first time actors, they knock it out of the park on this one.
