Batman: Arkham Origins Image

Remember back in February when a Warner Brothers executive said a new game in the ultra popular Batman video game franchise—which includes Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham Citywas on the way, but few people believed it was legit because no one knew Rocksteady Games was working on it? It turns out it was true, and that no one knew Rocksteady was working on it because Rocksteady is not working on it.

The next game in the Arkham franchise has been officially unveiled, and it will be called Batman: Arkham Origins. But instead of Rocksteady Games, it’s being made by Warner Brothers Games Montreal this time around.

The game will obviously be a prequel, taking place years before the other Arkham games. But it will not be an origins story of Batman (because we don’t need another one of those for a while), and it will not be an Arkham Asylum origins story. The game will tell a story set in a time when Batman is meeting certain crucial characters for the first time, while also trying to elude eight of the world’s deadliest assassins (one seen above), who have converged in Gotham City for one night—Christmas Eve—to kill him.

Even if you’re not thrilled that Rocksteady isn’t making the game, do know that WB Games has total access for the custom modified Unreal engine that gives the other games such a unique look and feel. It’s also the first game in the series that will be out in Gotham City itself, and the team is working hard to make sure it looks like a functioning city. On Christmas Eve. Hard to not get excited while visualizing that.

And as the executive promised, a release date of October 25, 2013 has also been announced. The game will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii U.

For you handheld gamers, another Batman game was also revealed titled Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate. It will be released on the same day as the console game, and will tell a completely different story set after the events of Arkham Origins.

Be sure to head over to Game Informer for their cover reveal of the game.

Now the question becomes what is Rocksteady working on now? A proper sequel for the soon-arriving next-generation systems, or something new?

  1. That’s pretty cool that they’re placing this game during Christmas Eve–I wonder if it’ll have that Batman Returns feel to it. Either way though, I think Warner Brothers Montreal will be able to do the Arkham series proud. I’m getting really psyched and now I can’t wait to play as Batman again. Unfortunately I don’t own either of the old games, so I’m going to put Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City in my Blockbuster @Home queue to replay them and tide me over while I wait. I first learned of Blockbuster @Home through my job at DISH; I try to test out all the different services we come out with, and I’ve been pretty grateful for this one. Before I got Blockbuster @Home from DISH, I’d always end up purchasing all the games I wanted to play; that got ridiculously expensive though, and this has saved me a ton of money. Also since it’s a flat pay-by-the-month service, my bill is always the same, no matter how many games I go through in a month!
