As much of a menace as he is to all the nine worlds of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it appears that there is one thing that can stop Loki dead in his tracks: a script. Now this doesn’t mean that Tom Hiddleston had a falling out with Marvel, Disney, or Joss Whedon, it just means that he won’t be in The Avengers 2. This is definitely a disappointment to anyone who is a fan of the actor or the character who loves to hear line like “Mewling quim” or “An ant has no quarrel with a boot.”
While a disappointment, it isn’t entirely unexpected. To have him as the villain, even in a smaller capacity, would be somewhat boring. Also that little teaser at the end of the first Avengers confirmed that Thanos is a greater threat than Loki and was the one pulling the strings, so why subject the audience to another appearance made by Loki, when you can have someone as powerful as Thanos.
Whedon confirmed that The Avengers 2 will lack Loki to the Empire Movie Podcast (via ScreenCrush) where he said:
“Everyone is going to be looking for the Loki-Hulk smash moment and you’ll be looking for [a quim moment]. First of all, imitating what I did before is the surest way to do it not as well. Second of all, Loki’s not there to say those terrible things. Although I do think we should bring the word back, not as an insult, it’s just a nice word.”
So there’s your answer, straight from the guy who is writing and directing the film. And even though the character won’t be back for The Avengers 2, he will make a return to the big screen when Thor: The Dark World opens in theaters on November 8 of this year.
Do you think The Avengers 2 needs Loki as a villain or are they just fine without him?
