SDCC 2013: Riddick panel: Vin Diesel

Remember back in June, Fast and Furious star Vin Diesel was all sly and like “Hey, Marvel requested a meeting with me, I have no idea why”? Then in July after he went down to the Marvel offices and had said meeting, he posted to his Facebook page, “Marvel meeting today”¦ Only the people in the room can tell you what was discussed”¦,” which was accompanied by a photo of the actor standing in front of a framed poster of the Avengers #2 comic book cover. Remember that?

It’s likely that Diesel will indeed appear in a Marvel movie (otherwise, how embarrassing for him!). But for some bizarre reason, whatever role he’s playing is such a secret he can only tease his fans about it. Early speculation was that he’d be playing Vision in The Avengers 2, but on Sunday the actor posted a picture from a comic book panel on his facebook page solely of Groot, the tree-like humanoid from Guardians Of The Galaxy. No caption came along with the photo, which was put up as Diesel’s FB cover photo for a little while, before it was changed (though the photo is still on FB).

Vin Diesel Groot Marvel Guardians Of The Galaxy

Marvel is currently working on a Guardians Of The Galaxy movie for an August 1, 2014 release, and while plenty of cast members have already been revealed – Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Chris Pratt, Benicio Del Toro, to name a few – who will be voicing the CGI character Groot is still unknown. Does Diesel’s Facebook cover photo change mean he’s voicing Groot, who in some iterations is basically the Hodor of the gang, simply saying “I am Groot” and nothing else? And if so, why is this such a big secret? This would mean that Vin Diesel might have one line of dialogue in a Marvel movie, holy shit! OK, it’s possible he’ll have more lines, depending on how the character is handled. But, still.

Is all this secrecy getting annoying? It sure is.
