Things did not go so well for the first standalone Wolverine movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. But this year’s sequel, The Wolverine, fared much better, scoring decent ratings and a respectable $413.5 million worldwide at the box office.

Thanks to this success, 20th Century Fox has entered into negotiations with both star Hugh Jackman to return as the popular Marvel antihero and title character, and also The Wolverine director James Mangold to return for another installment in the franchise.

The negotiations include Mangold writing a treatment for the sequel, but details on where the movie will take us and what story it will tell are unknown in these earliest stages.

The sequel to The Wolverine will be Jackman’s eighth cinematic turn as the character, the next being the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past, which hits theaters on May 24th of next year. He has also voiced the character in a pair of video games.
