PhobosLab’s ‘Z-Type’: ‘Space Invaders’ For The Typing Pool

PhobosLab's Z-Type

Hey, remember Space Invaders? How about Centipede? Now, do you remember your typing class in high school? Wait, what? I’m not kidding. You probably thought, while you were being endlessly drilled in high school on page after page of typing letter after letter that there’s no way that something as seemingly tedious as typing on a keyboard, whether you learned on a computer or an actual typewriter, could ever be fun. But you – and me, and everyone else who ever had to endure typing lessons – were wrong.

You can blame game designer Dominic Szablewski for ruining our collective pre-conceived notions and irrational prejudices against the sport of typing. His Linkedin page describes him as a “Freelance software engineer, Creator of the Impact Game Engine and Aspah Microblogging Software.” With Z-Type, Dominic’s set up a game field very reminiscent of that in classic 2D arcade games like Space Invaders. You sit at the bottom and “shoot” at words as they come floating toward you on little saucers by typing the words themselves. You have to type the complete word in order to destroy it.

Bong Joon-ho Wants You To Know That His Version Of ‘Snowpiercer’ Is Better Than The Weinstein Cut

Snowpiercer Director Boon Joon-ho

If and when we see Bong Joon-ho‘s Snowpiercer, it’s very unlikely that it will be the cut that the director approved, but the cut that The Weinstein Company wants you to see. The war of the cuts have been going on for quite some time, with Joon-ho being diplomatic about the the 20 minutes that the distributor wants to cut from the film. But recently the director has been extremely unhappy with how his film is being treated, and is now claiming that his cut is better than the Weinstien’s.

The war of words has really affected the film’s domestic marketing, for which there is none. Of the trailers that have been released, a lot of them have been international trailers. Even with Chris Evans starring in the film, it’s unlikely to gain the box office traction a sci-fi film would normally get. But Joon-ho’s statements could be just the push needed to get this film out there sooner than later. Hit the jump to see what the director had to say about his version when compared to Weinstein’s.

Ronald D. Moore's Helix on Syfy

We haven’t heard or seen a whole lot from Ronald D. Moore since Battlestar Galactica went off the air in 2009. Spinoff series Caprica had a rocky 17-episode run in 2010 before cancellation and he’s been involved with various other projects, but nothing has really taken off. But with a pair of new series on the way, Moore is looking to make 2014 a big year.

One of the two new shows he has on the way is titled Helix and, just like BSG, it will air on Syfy. You can read a synopsis of the show and check out the trailer below.
