There were mixed reactions to the surprising twist of Ben Kingsley‘s the Mandarin in Iron Man 3. Some of us were impressed with it, while others weren’t. Without getting into spoiler territory, let’s just say that not everything is as it seemed. So we will get to see the return of his character in Marvel’s upcoming one-shot All Hail The King.
You can see some images from the one-shot below. Minor spoilers will follow after the jump.
Despite rumors that All Hail The King would be a Loki-centric short, Entertainment Weekly confirms that Marvel’s latest one-shot will focus on Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery. Taking place after the events of Iron Man 3, Slattery is sent to prison for posing as the terrorist leader. However, Slattery seems to be basking in the glory of his new found fame, which he had been seeking for quite some time.
However, there aren’t too many people who were fond of Slattery’s antics. As writer Drew Pearce (who also wrote the script for Iron Man 3) explains, there is a group looking for him to answer why he would pose as a great leader of an organization renowned for terrorist acts:
“Imagine a real terrorist organization whose beliefs were long held and religious for thousands of years, and imagine a drunk, British actor coming along and essentially telling the world that he’s the face of your organization. I think they would be right to be quite angry.”
All Hail The King also stars Scoot McNairy (Argo), who will play a journalist asking about Slattery’s past and whether or not the Ten Rings organization is looking for him.
There are indeed rumors that this short could bridge the gap between Iron Man 3 and Iron Man 4. But it’s unlikely that Iron Man 4 would star Robert Downey Jr., considering he is only signed on for The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers 3.
The 14-minute short will be included as an bonus feature on the Thor: The Dark World Blu-ray, out February 25.
