It’s always exciting to see a film or TV series filmed on location instead of behind a green or blue screen. But when filming in prime locations like New York or Los Angeles, securing closed sets with the necessary permits can be problematic. Despite some of the red tape, Netflix’s upcoming Marvel series based on the heroes of Hell’s Kitchen: DareDevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Defenders will film all 60 episodes for the five series on location in New York.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, The Walt Disney Company, Marvel, and Netflix Inc. made the announcement today. According to the press release multi-million dollar incentive program was created to lure Marvel Studios to shoot in New York – seeing as most of the characters are based in the city this makes sense. Filming is set to begin in the Summer 2014 and will create at least three thousand jobs in New York State including up to 400 full-time jobs. The project will include nearly 60 one-hour episodes focused on the 4 Defenders characters: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

Marvel’s Ryan Penagos tweeted that NY Governor Cuomo says The Defender series would bring in about $200 million over the next three years.

Assuming that this series is a success, the series could be quite lengthy, and probably bring lesser known heroes who fit the Netflix mold. Which would mean more jobs, and more money for the city.

According to The Wall Street Journal, each series will be 13 episodes each, all culminating to The Defenders, which will have eight episodes. Think Phase One of the Marvel cinematic universe but on a much smaller scale. Plus these stories are set in New York City, so it makes a lot of sense that the deal was made. It all starts with Daredevil, which is expected to start shooting this summer.
