American Vampire: Second Cycle #1

American Vampire: Second Cycle #1 (DC/Vertigo Comics – $3.99) It’s been far too long for Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque’s American Vampire was last on the shelves, and it feels so good to have it back with American Vampire: Second Cycle #1. It’s easy to forget that Snyder rose to prominence on the strength of American Vampire, even though he was largely overshadowed by Stephen King writing the backup story for the first arc. Snyder has stepped out of the shadows though, and is now the biggest writer for DC, but you can tell this book is still his baby. I know that all of Snyder’s other series are important to him, there is something about American Vampire that makes it seems like he pours a little bit of extra energy into it. In this first issue of volume 2, we catch up with Pearl Jones and Skinner Sweet, the two main characters of the books. They are a new breed of vampire that are uniquely American, and so far we have seen their lives throughout the first half of the 20th century (and a bit beyond). Now, Snyder and Albuquerque bring the series into the 60s. This first issue has been promised to be a good jumping-on point, which is good because everyone should read this book, if not for Snyder’s interesting take on the vampire mythos, then for Albuquerque’s breathtaking art. As a fan of the series, I’m so glad that it’s back, and I can’t wait to see where the story goes.

Hellboy: The First 20 Years Hardcover (Dark Horse Comics – $19.99) 20 years of Hellboy are celebrated in this new hardcover collecting rare and never before seen images from the series. As a fan of the series, it will be exciting to see what they line up for this, and as a fan of comic art it will be interesting to see the work process for Mike Mignola, one of the masters of the comic form. This is the very definition of a must-buy for Hellboy fans.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 10 #1 (Dark Horse Comics – $3.50) Christos Gage and Rebekah Isaacs take over for the next season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics, having cut their teeth in the Buffyverse on the Angel series. The story arc is called “˜New Rules’, and it’s all about the ramifications of what Buffy has been doing with magic lately. It also looks like Gage and Isaacs plan to bring the vampires back to vampire slaying. I’m back to being interested in the series again, thanks in no small part because of the creative team. Christos Gage is a writer whose worked I’ve enjoyed quite a lot in the past, particularly his work on G.I. Joe: Cobra, and it helps that he is already familiar with the characters and the world. The same goes for Isaacs, who also has plenty of familiarity with the characters. It’s a good time to get back into the series if you’ve gotten away from it, and it’s sweet music for fans who have been reading the whole time.

Daredevil #1 (Marvel Comics – $3.99) If you weren’t reading one of the best comics out there before, you have no reason to miss Daredevil #1. Mark Waid and Chris Samnee remain on the book, but now they’ve moved the action to San Francisco. I’m not exaggerating when I say this is one of the five best comics being produced today. Waid has reenergized the character, who had been written by a string of great writers, but had gotten a bit too dark and brutal for my tastes. The book still has serious moments, but Waid is able to balance everything to make every issue enjoyable. And then you’ve got the art of Chris Samnee, which isn’t over rendered, you might even go so far as to call it simple or cartoony. However, the style hides such depth, and Samnee is able to convey so much with so few lines. I’m so happy that this team is still together and I hope that this issue gets more people reading Daredevil.
