Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ big-budget Godzilla reboot directed by Gareth Edwards (check out our own FamousMonster’s review here) has only been in release for a few days and it has already grossed $93 million in the U.S. and another $103 million worldwide. Critically speaking, the film has also done very well with a 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This Godzilla has defied the odds to become that rarest of cinematic blockbusters in this day and age, the one that will prove to be worth revisiting in years to come.
Next week’s opening of X-Men: Days of Future Past will likely put a dent in Godzilla‘s second weekend earnings, but won’t lessen the cultural impact of the legendary silver screen monster’s first successful U.S. outing. On Sunday it was confirmed that the studios are already developing a sequel to the (pun very much intended) monster smash.
Director Edwards has expressed interest in returning to helm the possible follow-up and has said he would utilize the same restraint in building up to the first appearance of the titular radioactive reptilian titan and the latest kaiju beastie it would be opposing. The Big G has taken on myriads of fantastic monsters in the original Toho Japanese movie series that began six decades ago, so the list of potential sparring partners for Godzilla is nearly endless.
Who could it be? Rodan? Mothra? Ghidorah? Destoroyah? Megalon? Hey, they could bring in Jet Jaguar to help! Maybe they’ll take a cue from 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars and have ‘Zilla take a break from fighting one of those superior foes to smack around the Godzilla from the 1998 Roland Emmerich stinker. The sequel is in the early stages of development so there’s no word yet on whether or not Edwards and writers Max Borenstein and David Callaham will be involved or any of the film’s human stars will reprise their roles. When we know, you’ll definitely know.
