Chronicle director Josh Trank isn’t the most household name in the superhero movie world, but the director has just signed on to direct a spinoff title of one of the most beloved geek franchises of all time.

Disney has announced that Trank has signed on to direct one of the Star Wars standalone movies; as to which one it may be – Boba Fett, Han Solo, Yoda, etc – we won’t know that until Disney and Lucasfilm makes an official announcement. This comes after the news that Godzilla director Gareth Edwards was confirmed to direct another Star Wars spinoff just a few weeks back, just days after his film earned the number one spot at the box office. Hit the jump to learn more.

Variety confirmed the news of Trank’s hiring soon after the announcement was made. Although the subject of the film was not revealed, they can confirm that the film will be a standalone spinoff and not a part of the newly established trilogy. Star Wars: Episode VII is being directed by J.J. Abrams, and is scheduled to hit theaters on December 16th, 2015.

Here is what Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy had to say about the news:

“We’re thrilled to welcome Josh into the family. He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX.”

Your typical ringing endorsements from the higher-ups, but what does Trank have to say about directing one of the first Star Wars spinoff films:

“The magic of the Star Wars universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time.”

Trank is currently working on the Fantastic Four reboot over at Fox, and it is pretty safe to say that he probably won’t be directing its sequel.

No release date has been set for this particular Star Wars spinoff.

So what do you think about the hiring? Who do you think the spinoff will be about, and is Trank the right person for the job?
