The GoD List Banner

Each and every week, I, “Go Kings!!” Henchman 21 and “Go Rangers!!” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of June 4, 2014. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Well, in the good old GoD List land, there are two things to be obsessed with: The Stanley Cup Final and of course, as always, comics! Right now we’re all about the comics. It’s not the best week for comics ever, but what there is happens to be pretty great. So check out the picks for this week on this weeks GoD List!

Henchman 21

Big Trouble in Little China #1 cover A

Big Trouble in Little China #1 (BOOM! Studios – $3.99) I have been patiently waiting for this book since it was announced a few months ago. John Carpenter‘s Big Trouble in Little China is one of my favorite movies ever, with its fun mix of action, humor, and mysticism. Now, it does seem a little weird to be making a comic based on the movie at this point, with it being a few years under 30 years since the original release, and it’s not like there’s a remake coming out (thank the maker). But I’m still cool with them making new stories, especially when the series is written by Eric Powell (The Goon) and is being overseen by Carpenter. The story follows the events of the movie, with hero Jack Burton discovering the monster hitching a ride on the Porkchop Express means business, drawing Burton back into action. This is just goofy enough to work, and Powell is the perfect fit for the property, so I have high hopes for this one.

Afterlife with Archie Volume 1: Escape From Riverdale (Archie Comics – $17.99) This has to be the buzz book of the year so far. I doubt there were many who thought they would love a zombie book starring the beloved characters of the Archie universe, but somehow writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa was able to make a book that overcome what is admittedly an odd concept for a series. It helps to have artist like Francesco Francavilla on the book to add his dark and atmospheric look to the series. I don’t know if this book would be quite as successful as it has been without the look that Francavilla gives it. If you still haven’t read this series yet, now you can get caught up with the first five issues and see what all the fuss is about.

Batman ’66 Meets The Green Hornet #1 (of 6) (DC Comics – $2.99) There are some who will say that Batman ’66, the digital first series based on the Adam West Batman series, is the best thing that DC is publishing these days. I’m not going to argue that, but I will note that Batman ’66 Meets The Green Hornet #1 isn’t written by the regular writer, Jeff Parker, but is instead written by Ralph Garman and director/sometime comic writer Kevin Smith, so take that as a warning if you’re expecting Parker to have written this. Fortunately for fans of the regular Batman ’66, this is drawn by Ty Templeton, so at least there is that carry over. This crossover makes a kind of sense when you remember that Batman and the Green Hornet teamed up in the second season of the Batman TV show, and this issue actually ties into those original episodes. Batman, Robin, The Green Hornet, and Kato must team up once again to take on General Gumm. Batman ’66 is a solid book normally, but I’m not 100% sure on this one, with the different writing team. Could still be fun.

Empress Eve

First of all, did you see how Henchman 21 said “Go Kings” over my Rangers? Is he crazy?! That’s some fightin’ words right there. He’s a Red Wings fan, damnit! If you don’t follow hockey, then you probably don’t know that tonight the LA Kings are facing off against the NY Rangers in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Do you know what it’s like to grow up a Rangers fan? The last time they won the Cup was in 1994 and that was after 54 years of NOT winning; now, it’s been 20 years since our last victory and I’ll be damned if the Rangers don’t take the Cup this year. WE WANT THE CUP!

Ok /hockey rant.

Next up: That bastard took my #1 comic book pick of this week: Big Trouble in Little China #1.

Thanks, friend.

If you dug the movie, this is a no-brainer. Grab this one and hold on tight.

Another thing: This week I took a great fall, kinda like Humpty Dumpty, and I do not feel so good. I spent most of Saturday in the ER and I hurt. And the pain meds make me sad and angry and blunt and less able to tolerate stuff. Things are also a big hazy. And I keep typing the wrong words. And then forgetting what I was going to say. And then wondering, what am I doing here? I blame the meds.

Anyhow, let’s see what other comics I want to read this week….

Danger Girl Mayday #3 (of 4) (IDW Publishing – $3.99) Ooh, a new Danger Girl book is out this week, sweet! I love Danger Girl and this latest miniseries from original writer Andy Hartnell sees the return of an old teammate/enemy. Only one more issue left after this one, so check it out (or catch up with issue #1).

Ok, time to go back on bed rest.
