SDCC 2014: Sin City: A Dame To Kill For panel

The anticipated sequel to Sin City, the highly stylized live-action cum comic book adaptation titled Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, made its debut at San Diego Comic-Con in famed Hall H on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and the audience got to see a clip from the film center on Mickey Rourke’s character Marv, as well as a teaser video of sorts with new footage.

Moderated by Geoff Boucher with a panel composed of Robert Rodriguez, who called the story one of the most original and groundbreaking graphic novels of all time, and creator/illustrator and writer of that graphic novel, Frank Miller, who was sporting wearing his trademark Fedora and admittedly, looking rather gaunt, but still waxed poetic about his craft and vision, a vision in which film noir meets surrealism, even on the printed page.

Miller also went on to express that even though he had an aversion to screenwriting per se, it was the impetus to create Sin City, in which he mentioned that it was his goal to create something that couldn’t be adapted to the silver screen, something which of course became a challenge and ultimately successful venture for Rodriguez.

Then the cast was introduced, starting with Rosario Dawson, Josh Brolin, and Jessica Alba, who returns to this universe, and because of that, said she felt she was the luckiest girl in Hollywood. This time out, the film is an original story adapted for the silver screen, and even gave Nancy (Alba’s character) a little more moxie, as Alba promised that she would be a warrior this time around.

Brolin spoke of being honored to be asked to be in this production, calling Robert (who he has known for over two decades) and Miller, “iconoclasts.” Dawson spoke of the film’s narrative and the myriad of sub-narratives which actually made her feel she was in this black and white, with splashes and dashes of color, concrete jungle. Brolin spoke highly of the dialogue, which evokes another time, a kind of Dashel Hammett blended with Miller’s surrealistic and dark stock in trade syntax.

Rodriguez used the support of Miller’s approval as the benchmark to the film’s successes as it came to cinematic fruition. What was most important to him, as in the first film, was staying true to Miller’s unique vision of comic architecture.

Near the end of the panel, Miller revealed that they are talking about doing a Sin City 3, imploring the audience to see the second movie so that the studio will pay for a third.

In the clip, we see Marv on “just another Saturday night.” He’s not sure why he’s there, but he then sees a homeless person on fire. When he goes to investigate, he sees a group of frat boys pouring gasoline on another vagrant, with the intention of setting the man on fire. Marv steps in to stop them, his voiceover narration telling us how much he hates these frat types.

The frat boys scoff at Marv’s attempt to verbally dissuade them from harming the homeless man, but it becomes obvious quickly that the hulking Marv is no one to mess with. They attempt to speed off in their car, but Marv pursues them, even jumping on a police car and crashing through the windshield and throwing the cops out of the car. Once he catches up with the frat boys, they don’t stand a chance against him, and the clip ends with him setting off an explosion to kill them all, as he jumps down out of the way.

For the teaser video is set to music Jessica Alba suggested and shows various scenes from the new movie, including Alba’s Nancy at work as a stripper and then also learning to shoot as she prepares to avenge Bruce Willis’s character John from the first movie — we even see Willis appear to tell Nancy not to avenge him. There’s a cameo by Frank Miller, scenes with Rosario Dawson and Juno Temple, and many snippets revolving around Josh Brolin’s character Dwight, on his fixation on his former flame, Eva Green’s character Ava Lord, the titular dame.

Sin City: A Dane to Kill For, comes to theaters later this year.
