Earlier this month, we learned that Roberto Orci would no longer be directing Star Trek 3. A shortlist of people to replace Orci, who co-wrote with Alex Kurtzman the first two Star Trek installments of the rebooted universe, was revealed, but no official word… until now.
Justin Lin, who was on said shortlist, has been tapped to directed Star Trek 3 for Paramount Pictures, Skydance Productions, and JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, according to an exclusive from Deadline.
Lin is best know for his movies in the popular Fast and Furious franchise, and it was reported last month that Universal was in talks with the director to helm an eighth and final Fast film. The director, who reportedly was the only one on the shortlist offered the Trek job, was also supposed to head up a sequel to The Bourne Legacy spinoff with Jeremy Renner, which was then postponed after Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass agreed to do another installment in the original Bourne Identity, which Universal plans to work on first.
