The first trailer for Magic Mike XXL isn’t a music video; although it might as well be marketed as one with all the dance moves and perfectly timed sound cues.
With Magic Mike director Steven Soderbergh retiring, Gregory Jacobs now takes the helm, which sees Channing Tatum‘s character, Magic Mike, hit the road for a final farewell tour. Hit the jump to check out the first sweaty trailer for Magic Mike XXL.
In anticipation for today’s trailer release, Tatum revealed yesterday the film’s first poster, which features the Foxcatcher actor shirtless and pointing to the words “COMING” on his crotch.
Although Magic Mike saw the title stripper retiring from his profession, Tatum’s Mike will disrobe once more for the sequel, which features the five lead male strippers — Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, and Adam Rodriguez all reprising their roles — on a road trip for one last gig at a Stripper Convention in Myrtle Beach, SC. Matthew McConaughey, though, won’t be back as Mike’s former stripper boss, but Jada Pinkett Smith, Andie MacDowell, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Glover, and Amber Heard have joined the cast for the new film.
So, what I got out of this trailer was, how can someone with so much muscle pull off all those dance moves and look weightless. And let’s not forget the phallic spark-shooting imagery that was seen a few seconds into the trailer. Also all the moves, claps, and spark shooting are all cued perfectly to the Ginuwine’s “Pony,” making this already one of the best trailers of the year. The first film was actually fun to watch, and if this footage is only a tease of what is to come, than Magic Mike XXL will probably have everyone want more.
Picking up the story three years after Mike bowed out of the stripper life at the top of his game, “Magic Mike XXL” finds the remaining Kings of Tampa likewise ready to throw in the towel. But they want to do it their way: burning down the house in one last blow-out performance in Myrtle Beach, and with legendary headliner Magic Mike sharing the spotlight with them. On the road to their final show, with whistle stops in Jacksonville and Savannah to renew old acquaintances and make new friends, Mike and the guys learn some new moves and shake off the past in surprising ways.
Magic Mike XXL opens in theaters on July 1, 2015.
