The ladies of the new Ghostbusters movie gathered together for a photo op during Sunday night’s SNL 40 After Party in New York City.
Saturday Night Live alum Kristin Wiig, current cast members Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, and two-time SNL host Melissa McCarthy all took part on Sunday evening in NBC’s live broadcast of the 3 1/2-hour star-studded Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special, which was followed by a private After Party that featured all-star musical jams with the likes of Prince, Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney, and more.
Check out the photo here below of the new Ghostbusters — Kristin Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon — at the SNL 40 After Party, which Jones posted to her Twitter account.
As far as we know, this is the first photo to make it out to the public of the four actresses together. Former Ghostbusters and fellow SNL alums Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd were also in attendance for the Special and its After Party, the latter of which saw the actors take the stage during the celebrity jam. (I wonder if someone thought to get these two actors in a photo with the four new female Ghostbusters at the After Party – I guess we’ll have to wait and see if any emerge online.*)
For the upcoming third Ghostbusters installment, the specific roles for the four actresses have not yet been revealed, although there have been some rumors as to who they’ll play and what the story will be.
As previously reported, Paul Feig, who directed Wiig and McCarthy in the 2011 hit comedy Bridesmaids, will be shooting from a script by Katie Dippold (The Heat) on a story that will be a full reboot with no ties to the original movies or characters. The filmmaking team is aiming to make this reboot scarier than the original 1984 film, which starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson as the “ghostbusters,” along with Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis, and Annie Potts. The third Ghostbusters film has a long and stories history, which saw at various points the original cast reuniting, until finally after many years in development hell, it was decided last year that Feig would direct a new film with all new characters, with an all female leads.
Sony’s new Ghostbusters, which is scheduled to begin filming in New York City this Spring, will be released in theaters on July 22, 2016.
*As soon as I posted this, I saw that Jones posted of a photo of herself with Murray, and another of her with Aykroyd (see Twitter post below; full images in the Image Gallery above).
Looks like Cecily Strong joined, playing “an authority figure that lies to the media.” Well, this certainly coincides with Feig’s “Ghostbusters are actually a secret government agency” master plan. No stay-puft marshmallow man, no connections to the originals, and I don’t suspect we’ll be hearing the famous theme song. This isn’t Ghostbusters, this is a Paul Feig movie with the Ghostbusters brand name slapped on it. I hope this project gets the “Superman Lives” treatment and never sees the light of day.
