It’s time to get peculiar again! Hollow City: The Second Novel of Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs is set for a paperback release on Tuesday, February 24, 2015. Quirk Books is known for their “peculiar” works and GoD loves to read them. From the first Miss Peregrine and The Last Policeman to the mash-up of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to How to Make Your Cat An Internet Celebrity, Princesses Behaving Badly, and The Geek’s Guide To Dating, and many more in between, Quirk Books always delivers.

Hollow City begins where the first novel left off. The children are in a hopeless situation — they have to escape their loop and Miss Peregrine is stuck in bird form, after Jacob and Emma killed a hollow. They end up in the midst of the air raids in 1940s England, searching for another ymbryne who can help. Jacob is learning how to maneuver his peculiarity — the ability to sense and see wights, and how to maneuver his growing feelings for Emma, who really is the girl “on fire.” At least…she is on fire when she chooses to be. Along the way, they meet some Gypsies and a couple of stray Peculiars. We even get peculiar animals! They make some questionable moral choices, but they are desperate because in less than two days, Miss Peregrine will be stuck as a bird forever.

This second effort is exciting and fast-paced as the children go from one harrowing experience to another. Underneath all that is an eternal theme for YA readers, feeling like a misfit and trying to hide your differences from the outside world.

There is a giant twist at the end which threw me for a “loop.”

The vintage photography throughout the book is creepy as shit as usual (and those who know the trivia — that’s how the “peculiars” came about — from Riggs photos), and enhances the text. You really feel you’ve entered a circus freakshow a la American Horror Story (but much much much better).

Check out GoD’s other coverage of all things Miss Peregrine, including who direct Tim Burton wants to play Jacob in the second movie, and the casting of Samuel L. Jackson.
