Paul Reubens‘ Pee-wee Herman character is coming back in a very big way. After years of gestating, we are finally getting a new film called Pee-wee’s Big Holiday. The film, which will appear exclusively on Netflix, is currently in production.
While no official release date has been set, Reubens has posted the first teaser photo from the film, and will be chronicling the entire experience throughout the production on his blog. Hit the jump to check out the first photo.
The latest post reveals that Big Holiday is only in its second day of production, so it’s possible that we won’t get to see the film until very late into the year or early next year. But here is how the 62-year-old actor described his experience and his excitement getting back into the role:
“Wow, am I tired! Just finished the second day of filming. Hitchhiked yesterday all day. Got a ride, hitchhiked some more, then got another ride. A lot of traveling in two days!Sound vague? Want to know more? Well, I hope you’ll check in here periodically and I’ll tell you what I can while we film. And please, see “˜Pee-wee’s Big Holiday’ on Netflix when it’s finished, won’t you???!!!!!!!!!”
John Lee (Broad City, Inside Amy Schumer) makes his directorial debut helming the film, which is being produced by Judd Apatow.
The movie was first teased back in October when Pee-wee visited The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, before it was officially announced late last month. When officially announced, Pee-wee said of the news:
“Judd and I dreamt up this movie four years ago. The world was much different back then”” Netflix was waiting by the mailbox for red envelopes to arrive. I’ve changed all that. The future is here. Get used to it. Bowtie is the new black.”
In Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, a fateful meeting with a mysterious stranger inspires Pee-wee to take his first-ever holiday in an “epic story of friendship and destiny,” per Netflix.
