It’s being reported that Pacific Rim and Luther star Idris Elba has entered into negotiations to play the villain in the upcoming Star Trek 3.
Who exactly Elba would be playing is not yet known at the moment, though there have been some whispers that Klingons could be the main bad guys for this latest entry in the franchise. Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions would not confirm or deny.
If a deal is signed and sealed, Elba would join the cast of returning stars that includes Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, John Cho, and Anton Yelchin.
The trilogy-maker will be directed by Justin Lin this time around. Lin has directed Better Luck Tomorrow, multiple installments of the Fast and Furious franchise including The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, Fast Five, and Fast & Furious 6, and also episodes of the upcoming second season of HBO’s True Detective. J.J. Abrams directed the first two Star Trek movies in this rebooted series, before moving on to the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens. Abrams will remain on board Trek 3 as a producer, however.
In addition to his roles in Pacific Rim and Luther, Elba has also starred in The Wire, 28 Weeks Later, RocknRolla, Thor and its sequel Thor: The Dark World, Prometheus, and most recently, The Gunman. Upcoming projects he can be seen or heard in include Beasts of No Nation, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Bastille Day, The Jungle Book, and Pixar’s Finding Nemo sequel, Finding Dory.
Another prominent British actor played the villain Khan in the previous Trek movie, Star Trek Into Darkness, Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch.
Who do you think Elba might be playing in Star Trek 3?
