I went into Legenderry: Green Hornet #2 with a little bit of trepidation. Not only had I never read the Dynamite Legenderry series, but I’ve never really had any exposure to steampunk. Yes, I’m familiar with the basic concept of it, but I know next to nothing when it comes to the particulars. But, I love the Green Hornet, so I figured I’d give it a shot.
OK, I’m seriously behind the eight-ball here. Not only am I not familiar with the Legenderry world, or steampunk, I’m not familiar with the work of writer Daryl Gregory. But, all that fell by the wayside as soon as I started reading this issue. Within about three pages I realized that I didn’t need to know anything about any of those things, what I knew is that I had bought into this book and this world hook, line, and sinker. The issue furthers the quest of the Green Hornet to figure out what is going on with the gangs in the city. While the cast is pretty large, you never get the feeling that the Green Hornet is secondary in his own book. He’s the star, there’s no doubt about it. Add to that the giant amount of mystery that’s in this book and you’ve got a can’t miss issue!
Artist Brent Peeples does an amazing job portraying this world and making it accessible to the average reader. These are some of the coolest designs that I’ve ever seen, and as a bonus, Peeples renders them so that they make sense — they’re not confusing or weird to the reader at all. Beyond the steampunk designs, there’s some great talent in this book. The pages are laid out beautifully; the characters are all unique, yet all fit into this world seamlessly. He’s got a great gift for storytelling.
Whether you’ve read everything in the Legenderry universe, or are like me and have never read one page, you should definitely pick this issue up. It’s well worth your time and money, and you’re going to get a lot more entertainment than you’re expecting.
