‘Spider-Man’ Reboot To Focus On High School Peter Parker

In February, Sony announced that it would share Spider-Man with their rivals, Marvel Studios. Though Sony would still retain the rights and creative control, it meant that the webslinger could be seen alongside heroes like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, etc. The deal also says that Marvel won’t pay Sony anything to use the character in their cinematic universe, such as The Avengers movies or Captain America: Civil War, and neither Sony nor Marvel will take a cut of the other studios’ projects involving Spider-Man.

It is expected that Spider-Man may make his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War. If that is the plan, then casting should be underway since the Captain America sequel is expected to begin filming as soon as the Avengers: Age of Ultron press tour is complete. Dylan O’Brien and Logan Lerman were rumored to be in the running at one point in time, and it was even reported that the reboot may have Miles Morales instead of Peter Parker. But Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirms that the new Spider-Man reboot will focus on Parker and that it won’t be an origins story.

Feige confirmed the news to Collider during the Avengers: Age of Ultron press junket this weekend. The Marvel Studios President added that the film would be set during Parker’s years as a high school student.

“In terms of the age of an actor we’ll eventually to cast, I don’t know. In terms of the age of what we believe Peter Parker is, I’d say 15-16 is right.”

It was last reported that Weeds star Mateus Ward was one of the frontrunners to play Spider-Man, though we have yet to hear an actual confirmation. Apparently the entire audition process was such a secret, it was held off the Sony lot.

Tobey Maguire played the first iteration of Spider-Man, who graduated high school within the first few minutes of the film. We saw Andrew Garfield spend his life as a high school student in The Amazing Spider-Man franchise.

In the same interview, Feige explains to the site why we are going to revisit Spider-Man in his high school years, despite having done that already three times before in two separate franchises:

“We want to play with Spider-Man in the high school years because frankly there’ve been five Spider-Man films and the amazing thing about it is, even though there’ve been five Spider-Man films, there are so many things from the comics that haven’t been done yet.”

Again, if the rumors are indeed true, and we are to see Spider-Man appear in Captain America: Civil War, then we should expect to hear someone being cast in the role some time during the production of the film.

Drew Goddard is attached to write and direct the tentatively titled The Spectacular Spider-Man, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 28, 2017.

  1. I don’t know. I kinda liked Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Spider-Man and Emma Stone was awesome as Gwen Stacey. I feel like these kind of singular superhero movies ultimately fail for the same reason (I think) the first round of Batman sequels did: too many villains and not enough time to become invested in them. Once the origins of the titular superhero are behind them, we’re suddenly focusing on more and more villains to fill screen time. Why does each sequel need to add +1 villain to the previous installment?
