On the heels of the news that Patty Jenkins is replacing Michelle MacLaren to direct DC/Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman, comes word that Marvel could be making an offer to Angelina Jolie to direct Captain Marvel. Before Jenkins signed on, Warner Bros was considering having Jolie direct Wonder Woman. But now that the film has found a director, Marvel will be able to make an offer to Jolie in hopes that she would direct Captain Marvel. Hit the jump for more.
The news comes from Collider who says that Jolie is under “serious consideration” for the job. Jolie is currently working on By The Sea – which is in post-production – and will be directing her husband, Brad Pitt, in Africa. However, there are reports saying that the film is under financial strain, and could fall apart if it doesn’t get the money it needs. Should that happen, it would put her in a great position to be able to direct Captain Marvel. She had previously directed In The Land of Blood and Honey and Unbroken.
Jolie is a solid choice given that she has starred in plenty of action films like Wanted and Salt, but also has a strong directing background with the aforementioned films. But Captain Marvel would be a huge effects-heavy undertaking, more so than Unbroken. The film is also unlike any other one she had directed in terms of budget costs and tone. Based on her features, she tends to direct the more grounded and serious material. Then again, based on her previous performances, she is certainly open to doing something more fantastical and action-based.
Should Jolie sign on, it would make her the first female director to helm a Marvel film. Jenkins would have been the first had she stayed on to direct Thor: The Dark World, but she left due to creative differences. As aforementioned, she eventually would sign on to direct Wonder Woman, making her the first female director to helm a DC Cinematic Universe film.
Captain Marvel will be written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (co-writer of Pixar’s Inside Out). Marvel has tentatively scheduled the film for a November 2, 2018 release (from its original July 6, 2018 date).
