After weeks of speculation and rumors, AMC’s Preacher — based on the critically acclaimed Vertigo comic book series by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon — has finally found its leading man.
Actor Dominic Cooper has been confirmed for the role of Jesse Custer. Cooper is no stranger to bringing comic book characters to life, having played the role of Howard Stark, the father of Tony Stark (Iron Man) in Captain America: First Avenger and its spin-off television series, Agent Carter.
The casting of Cooper was announced by none other than series creator, Seth Rogen, via his official Twitter account.
Check out his tweet below:
Cooper joins an already eclectic group of actors, starring alongside Ruth Negga (Love/Hate, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) Joseph Gilgun (This is England, Misfits), Lucy Griffiths (Robin Hood, True Blood), and Ian Colletti (Rake). The Preacher televisions series, from creators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, will follow “Jesse Custer (Cooper), a conflicted preacher in a small Texas town who merges with a creature that has escaped from heaven and develops the ability to make anyone do anything he says. Along with his ex-girlfriend, Tulip (Negga), and an Irish vampire named Cassidy (Gilgun), the three embark on a journey to literally find God.
Here’s AMC’s official description of the TV series:
Preacher follows Reverend Jesse Custer, a tough Texas preacher who has lost his faith, has learned that God has left Heaven and abandoned His responsibilities. He finds himself the only person capable of tracking God down, demanding answers, and making Him answer for His dereliction of duty. Accompanying Jesse on his journey is his former girlfriend and a friendly vampire who seems to prefer a pint in the pub to the blood of the innocent. On his tail is one of the most iconic bad guys in print – an immortal, unstoppable killing machine named the Saint of Killers – a western lone gunman archetype whose sole purpose is to hunt and kill Jesse.
