‘Fantastic Four’ Trailer: Doctor Doom Has A New Look

Fantastic Four The Thing

This weekend saw three major trailers drop: first there was Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was then followed by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. And now comes one for Fantastic Four.

Oddly enough, director Josh Trank was supposed to make an appearance on the final day of Star Wars Celebration to talk about his secret spinoff film, but attendees were told he fell ill, and could not make it. Now we can’t be certain if this is true, but a trailer dropping on the same day he was scheduled to make an appearance is quite suspect. Whatever the reason, we are getting a brand new trailer for Fantastic Four, which gives us a little more backstory on our four heroes — Mr. Fantastic (Miles Teller), Invisible Woman (Kate Mara), Human Torch (Michael B. Jordan), and The Thing (Jamie Bell) — as well as the villain, Doctor Doom (Tobey Kebbell). Hit the jump to check it out.

FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

The new trailer gives us our first good look at the powers and characters of the Fantastic Four. We recently got a better look at The Thing, who only has appeared in his cocoon state in the previous promos and trailers. But that isn’t the biggest reveal of the newest trailer. In it, we finally get to see Doctor Doom, who doesn’t appear to be wearing a mask, instead it is something a little bit more organic.

Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot draws inspiration more from the Ultimates version than it does the original comics. Our heroes receive their powers through inter-dimensional travel, not space, and these characters seem to be up-and-coming scientists recruited by the government, not already established ones. And while some fans may know of the characters’ relationships, it is nice to see that the trailer provides some context as to who they are and what the film is about.

Written and produced by Simon Kinberg, Fantastic Four also stars Reg E. Cathey and Tim Blake Nelson. It opens August 7, 2015.
