Marvel’s Subtle Nods To ‘Star Wars’ In Phase 2 Films

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Marvel has sneaky way of dropping some Easter Eggs in their films. Sometimes it may be a visual thing or an auditory thing, but there is one non-Marvel nod that you may have missed. The lost of upper limbs has been somewhat of a recurring theme throughout Phase 2 of the MCU, and that’s because its making a reference to Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

While on the Avengers: Age of Ultron press tour, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed that such Easter eggs exist, and you can expect to see them in the Avengers sequel and Ant-Man. Minor spoilers will follow.

Feige revealed the Star Wars Easter eggs existed within Phase 2 of the MCU to CinemaBlend. Here is what he told the site:

“So is this a spoiler for Ant-Man”¦ not really. I’m obsessed with Star Wars. Who’s not? I’m 40 years old. I’m in the movie business. I went to USC. So I’m obsessed with Star Wars – and it didn’t start out as intentional, but it became intentional, including that beat that you referenced. It sort of happens in every Star Wars movie, but I was sort of looking at it, “˜Okay, is Phase Two our Empire Strikes Back?’ Not really, but tonally things are a little different. Somebody gets their arm cut off in every Phase Two movie. Every single one.”

Despite Avengers films concluding each Phase of the MCU, Ant-Man is still considered a part of Phase 2. To keep things non-spoilerly, I won’t tell you who loses their arm in Age of Ultron. However, we know that Aldrich Killian loses an arm after it is sliced off in Iron Man 3; Loki mischievously cuts off Thor’s arm to fool Malekith in Thor: The Dark World; in a Captain America: The Winter Soldier flashback it is revealed that Bucky’s arm is missing after he fell off a train; and Gamora hacks both of Groot’s arms in Guardians of the Galaxy until they are clean off. Now you may think that it is just coincidence, but Feige’s quotes pretty much confirms it was all intentional.

So just expect to see at least two more people to lose their arms. After hearing this, I’m kind of interested to see who loses their arm in Ant-Man, and how it’s done.

Avengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1. Ant-Man opens July 17.
