James Wan Officially Directing ‘Aquaman’

Jason Momoa Unite The Seven Aquaman Justice League Banner

In April it was reported that Warner Brothers was looking at James Wan to direct Aquaman for them. Now it’s official, as Wan is signed on and locked in for the job. He’ll also be supervising the writing of the film’s script, which is set to be penned by Kurt Johnstad (300, 300: Rise of an Empire).

Wan is best known for his work in the realms of horror, directing Saw, Dead Silence, Insidious, The Conjuring, and Insidious: Chapter 2. He’s also attached to direct the upcoming The Conjuring 2. Wan stepped away from horror last year to direct the latest installment in the Fast and the Furious franchise, Furious 7, replacing the director of the previous four movies in the franchise, Justin Lin.

Game of Thrones and Stargate: Atlantis star Jason Momoa is signed on to play Aquaman in four movies currently, which now has a brief plot summary courtesy of Warner Brothers. The movie:

…follows Aquaman, the King of the Seven Seas and the reluctant ruler of Atlantis, who is caught between a surface world constantly ravaging the sea and Atlanteans looking to lash out in revolt, but is committed to protecting the entire globe.

Warner Bros. Pictures President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production Greg Silverman spoke of Wan’s hiring, saying:

“We’ve been so lucky to have worked with James, first on New Line’s “˜The Conjuring’ and now on their upcoming “˜The Conjuring 2,’ and are thrilled to have him on board as we continue to expand our DC slate. The “˜Aquaman’ film will be a major tentpole picture for us, and James’ span of work has proven him able to take on any manner of project, bringing his incredible creative talent and unique voice to the material.”

Aquaman is currently scheduled for a July 27, 2018 release, so it’s expected to be Wan’s next project after completion of The Conjuring 2. He was also one of Sony’s favorites to direct a RoboTech movie, so it’s not clear if he’s also hoping to fit that in sometime in the next handful of years or if Sony will simply hire someone else.

The movie will be produced by Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, and Charles Roven.

UPDATE: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wan has also closed a deal to direct the aforementioned RoboTech for Sony. A busy man indeed.
