Brad Pitt in War Machine

Yes, you read that correctly. No, it’s not the War Machine that you are probably thinking of. This is Brad Pitt‘s War Machine, a satrical comedy from David Michôd (Animal Kingdom). Based on the nonfiction bestseller The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan, by late journalist Michael Hastings, Pitt will play a four-star military general who is modeled after Stanley McChrystal.

More on this story below.

According to Deadline, War Machine will be Netflix’s big push into the film industry. They have already successfully launched a number of original television programming, and it was only a matter of time before they ventured into film. The project is estimated to have a $30 million budget, making it Netflix’s biggest investment so far.

Pitt and his Plan B cohorts Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner will produce it with Ian Bryce.

Here is how the site describes the project:

“The book captured McChrystal in his cocky glory, and focused on the backrooms and politics of war and the high-stakes maneuvers and political firestorm that shook the country. Hastings, who followed McChrystal around Europe and Afghanistan for a month in 2010 for a Rolling Stone article, quoted the general badmouthing the White House and its handling of the war. That proved to be his undoing; after Rolling Stone published the article “The Runaway General,” McChrystal was ordered back to D.C. by President Obama, and McChrystal tendered his resignation there.”

Pitt is just coming off another war movie, David Ayer’s Fury. He will also be seen in Angelina Jolie’s latest directorial effort, By The Sea. He is currently filming Adam McKay’s 2008 financial crisis film, The Big Short, which stars Ryan Gosling, Melissa Leo, Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Selina Gomez, Karen Gillan, and much more.

Michôd is best known for writing Hersher starring Joesph Gordon-Levitt and Isla Fisher, as well as writing and directing Animal Kingdom starring Joel Edgerton and Sullivan Stapleton. His newest film, The Rover, stars Robert Pattinson and Guy Pearce.

Michôd on making War Machine,

“I’m humbled to be making a big, bold movie about the whole sprawling, complex, cumbersome and crazy machinery of modern war and the many lives it touches.”

Netflix is eyeing War Machine for a qualifying theatrical run, then one major 2016 release.
