Deadpool Comic-Con

It’s was Fox’s turn to take the Hall H stage at San Diego Comic-Con 2015 Saturday night, and they brought their superhero big guns with them for the event in the form of X-Men: Apocalypse, Fantastic Four reboot, and the Merc with a Mouth himself, Deadpool.

It was the latter that really got the crowd going bonkers, perhaps even eliciting the biggest response of the entire convention when a brutally violent and funny—as it should be—preview of the movie was shown. The trailer got a standing ovation followed by a “one more time!” chant forcing them to play it a second time.

“It’s only been 11 years in the making,” said star Ryan Reynolds, who was on hand for the event. “One year ago, it was some asshole who released the footage onto the internet.” And here we are.

Continue reading for more from Reynolds and more cast, as well as a description of the trailer shown.

Joining Reynolds for the Deadpool panel was director Tim Miller, Morena Baccarin (who plays Vanessa), T.J. Miller (Weasel), Ed Skrein (Ajax), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), and Gina Carano (Angel Dust).

Tim Miller said that Fox told him he could make the movie if he wanted to do it.

Ryan believes that Deadpool inhabits a space in the comic world that no other character could. He still can’t believe that the studio would let him make Deadpool, let alone an R-rated Deadpool. Miller and Reynolds believe that the world is ready for something different. Reynolds adds that babies will love the film, no matter what the rating was.

Reynolds proceeded to say that he finally gets to wear a proper suit, taking a shot at the fact that he didn’t get to one while he filmed Green Lantern (which digitally added in post production).

Baccarin says her character is a perfect match to Deadpool’s crassness, and will give Wade lip.

Miller also assured audiences that they will “fucking love this movie.”

Hildebrand says that she is a 15-year old mutant in training, and is Colossus’s trainee. Says everyone in the cast got along great, and admitted that she may or may not have had a crush on Reynolds when she was younger. She also showed a photo of herself photoshopped into a photo of Reynolds, who apparently sported very sexy abs.

Ed Skrein says that Ajax runs a facility that gave the terminally ill Deadpool his superpowers, but “can’t understand why he is so ungrateful.”

Gina Carano says that Angel Dust has anger issues, and she helped create Deadpool with Ajax.

Tim Miller allowed riffing and improv to continue, and added that Reynolds and Miller couldn’t stop doing it. He added that the studio wouldn’t stop them either. Carano commented that Tim Miller was the most dramatic on the cast, with Reynolds chiming in saying that he was one big cry baby.

Sometimes things got too far, and Reynolds joked that he asked Miller to omit that out of fear that he would offend some organizations. T.J. Miller who also wrote some of the jokes in the film, admitted that some of them were really mean.

Reynolds says that Deadpool is everything we love about the comics, especially breaking the fourth wall, and it will be the most faithful. Assures that this Deadpool will not have is mouth shut, and he will do his best to annoy the living shit out of everyone around him.

Next the trailer is shown. It starts off with Wade Wilson coming to terms with his illness which has spread to his lungs, liver, other vital organs, all of the things he does not need as he joked to his girlfriend Baccarin.

Wade would undergo a dangerous treatment that would not only cure his cancer but give him superpowers. He explains that he just wants to do right by the people he loves, but requests that the suit not be green or animated.

The procedure looks painful, and the trailer takes us to the opening moments of the trailer that leaked last year with the titular character sitting on a freeway overpass drawing childish assassinations, only to casually dropping straight to target SUV, as soon as his pursuers reach him, he explains the reason why he wears read is so that his enemies can’t see him bleed, and points out that one of the assassins is lucky to be wearing his brown pants.

After successfully incapacitating his enemies, he is knocked out by Colossus who is accompanied by Negasonic Teenage Warhead, which is one of the best damn names Deadpool has ever heard of.

The jokes hit fast and hard, with Deadpool breaking the fourth wall plenty of times. On the subject of the mean jokes T.J. Miller wrote, we see Weasel seeing Deadpool unmasked, he starts off with saying that he looked like a testicle with teeth. The riffing continued with Weasel commenting that Wade looked like Freddie Kruger “fucked a topographical map of Utah.” It goes on even further where Weasel says that he “looked like an avocado fucked an older avocado.”

Why this film took so long to make is beyond me, but at least we are finally getting Deadpool in February 2016.

The Fox panel ended with the ultimate superhero selfie, including cast members from five different comic book movies and the great Stan Lee:
