SYTYCD 1207-13

The Top 20 performed on So You Think You Can Dance last night, a chance to show off their excellence in their own forms. After a harrowing time during Vegas week, these 20 proved that they outshone their peers, and had what it takes to get to the live show. SYTYCD judges Nigel Lythgoe, Jason Derulo, and Paula Abdul had the most difficult job of choosing the best of the best, with some assistance from Team Street mentor Stephen “tWitch” Boss (most recently of Magic Mike XXL) and Team Stage mentor Travis Wall. Host Cat Deeley kept everyones spirits up during the previous episodes, but returned to the spotlight to look lovely, and do what she does best.

“Welcome… to So You Think You Can Dance!”

Last week we told you that between The Top 20 getting chosen and last night’s show, someone got hurt, allowing the judges to bring someone back that was previously cut. Unfortunately, the hurt dancer was Alain “Hurrikane” Lauture. Fortunately, Asaf, the Hebrew breaker, has returned!

The opening that introduces the dancers is sick. Then the 1st dance…

Team Stage & Team Street | Choreographer: Chris Scott
Dancers: Top 20
Song: “Revolt” by Nathan Lanier

This was a battle (a short one) between stage and street, then mixed it up. I wasn’t super crazy about it, but it was still good – a nice representation of what we can expect for the rest of this season.

Team Street | Hip-Hop | Choreographer: Dave Scott
Dancers: Megz, JJ, & Neptune
Song: “The Illest” Far East Movement feat. Riff Raff

I think these moves would have been better suited with a faster track. That being said, these guys did a good job. Not wow, but good. Megz attitude matches her dancing. She is a highlight for me.

Team Stage | Contemporary | Choreographer: Stacey Tookey
Dancers: Gaby, Derek & Moises
Song: “Luminous” by Max Richter

Contemporary is my least favorite dance style, but this performance gave me the chills. These three dancers flowed so gorgeously, like water in a brook. The song seemed to inspire them to be bigger than they were, and Derek’s spin and leap was an “Ahh” moment.

Team Street | Hip-Hop | Choreographer: Dave Scott
Dancers: Lily, Jaja, Asaf & B1
Song: “Easy (Switch Screens)” by Son Lux feat. Lorde

As usual, I cannot take my eyes off of Jaja. The boys did a good job of remaining in sync during the spins, which seems near impossible to do. I really liked when they linked arms and moved side to side.

Team Stage | Jazz | Choreographer: Brian Friedman
Dancers: Hailee, Marissa & Alexia
Song: “New Dorp. New York” by SBTRKT feat. Ezra Koenig

Very sexy dance (the outfits helped) with a good beat for jazz. The smaller movements were pronounced and performed well, better than the big ones. The girls had to do this dance in monster heels. Kudos.

Team Stage | Ballet | Choreographer: Benoit Swan Pouffer
Dancers: Jim & Darion
Song: “Blood and Stone” by Audiomachine

These men are pure athletes, who just happened to have exquisite grace. I love when ballet or contemporary routines are put together with songs such as this one, it enhances the strength of the movement. Just beautiful.

Team Street | Hip-Hop | Choreographers: Pharside & Phoenix
Dancers: Ariana, Yorelis & Virgil
Song: “Locked Out Of Heaven” by Bruno Mars

This upbeat dance had Virgil dancing to decide between heaven and hell. The song choice was perfect for the dance. I felt the girls (Yorelis more than Ariana, and Yorelis is my girl) were a little out of sync for the parts where they had to be. Virgil’s always happy demeanor went along with it.

Team Stage | Contemporary | Choreographer: Travis Wall
Dancers: Kate & Edson
Song: “Shaped Like A Gun” by Tailor

This was quite beautiful. Nothing stood out as a “gasp” moment, but Edson looked very strong, their lines were good, and their connection looked effortless.

Team Stage | Jazz | Choreographer: Warren Carlyle
Dancers: Team Stage Top 10
Song: “Body language” by Queen

Excellent routine, especially the little tap solo in the middle. This is an excellent song for jazz (and an excellent song for everything), giving natural emphasis for the moves.

Team Street | Hip-Hop | Choreographers: Tabitha & Napoleon
Dancers: Team Street Top 10
Song: “Ready or Not Here I Come” by District 78 feat. Cheesa

I loved this! I loved the staging, the costumes, the choreography (Go NappyTabs!), everything.

Bonus Video: Jason Derulo performs while the All-Stars act as backup dancers.
