Dominion on Syfy returned for season 2 last Thursday night, and did not short us on excitement and beheadings. Loosely based on the film Legion, Season 1 was 8 episodes, and introduced us to the battle between angels and humans. God is missing (Dogma?), and almost all of the angels led by the archangel Gabriel (Carl Beukes), want to destroy them all. He recruits lesser angels called 8-balls – angel-possessed humans, named as such for their all black eyes. They are vicious and snarl a lot with their sharp teeth. Set 25 years after God disappeared, this apocalyptic show finds humans settled in the city of Vega (short for Las Vegas). The archangel Michael (Tom Wisdom) has sided with humanity. There is also a prophecy of a “Chosen One” in the form of Alex (Christopher Egan), who is Charlie’s son from Legion. Alex has moving tattoos that give him guidance. And Claire (Roxanne McKee) is the head of Vega, and having Alex’s baby. Oh, and I think Giles, I mean David Whele (Anthony Head), is evil. Caught up?
Dominion 2.1 “Heirs Of Salvation” review: This was a really exciting episode. It opens with a vicious 8-ball Vs Michael scene, then immediately flashes to two days earlier. Michael (nudity on Syfy!) always seems in a contemplative state, but bathing in the sea makes it more so. He comes upon a prospering town where hissing 8-balls hover around the perimeter, but don’t go in. He does and is immediately deweaponized, and is amazed. This town hears God, and the fire burning in the center of town is sacred, and keeps the mutant human/angel hybrids away. During a storm, the fire goes out, clearly something that happens occasionally, and the town fights. Gabriel picks up arms with them. He’s a believer that his father hears them.
Claire bombs the aerie where Gabriel and his minions are holding Alex and Noma (Kim Engelbrecht – shocked about the baby, understandably), torturing Noma by pinning her wings, so Alex will give Gabriel what he wants – the translation of his tattoos. Claire knew this, but thought killing Gabriel was an acceptable sacrifice. Alex and Noma escape, and somehow, Alex cures an 8-ball of his teeth and eyes, with his tattoos. They drag the human along. It has to mean something. David Whele is a nasty mofo. I love evil Giles! He has hotels in Vega set on fire so the poor people can’t live there.
This episode was great! All treachery and battle, with two exciting and hopeful developments, and two villains plotting. I can’t decide who is worse – Gabriel or David.
Dominion airs Thursday nights at 10pm ET on Syfy.
