Ah, video game movies. When Mortal Kombat is your high watermark, you know it’s bad. This week, after a break to celebrate SDCC, the gang at Screen Junkies were back at work giving us another Honest Trailer… The first, and somehow not worst (though they tried) video game movie of all time… Super Mario Bros.
Watch the Honest Trailer of Super Mario Bros. below.
I remember seeing this movie as a kid, and thinking even then at age 11, “these people never played the game.” As narrator Jon Bailey points out, “Before we learned video game movies were a bad idea, see the film that proved… Video game movies were a bad idea.” It is so easy to rip into this movie, because it was such a colossal failure at adapting the game. King Koopa (a dragon in the game) is Dennis Hopper as an evil politician, and Mario doesn’t even jump. In fact neither actor who play the ITALIAN plumbers, Mario and Luigi (Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo), are even Italian.
The games are filled with colorful worlds and shiny objects… So travel to a dark dystopian future called Dino-Hattan… WTF?! Bailey then makes another hilarious and obvious connection comparing Hoskins’ performance in this dreck, to his great role as Eddie Valiant in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I had to check IMDB, but Bailey isn’t lying when he says that the film was so bad it ended the movie making careers of its directors, Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton.
Alternative title: “Super Mari-Oh Brother.” Screen Junkies has over 4-million subscribers on YouTube and releases a new Honest Trailer every Tuesday.
