HBO has released the first video preview of their upcoming series Westworld, which is describes as a “dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.” It’s only 30 seconds long, but has plenty of quick peeks at footage that will surely excite many fans of HBO’s programming.
The series is inspired by the 1973 movie of the same name, which was directed by Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton and starred Yul Brynner, and was set in a theme park filled with robots recreating three different historical periods: the old west, medieval times, and Roman times. When a power surge in the park causes a malfunction, robots begin killing people and two guests find themselves being chased by an android cowboy.
You can watch the first teaser video for the new series below.
Westworld features a very impressive cast, including the likes of Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Miranda Otto, Rodrigo Santoro, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Angela Sarafyan, and Simon Quarterman.
The show comes from Jonathan Nolan, who has previously worked on the screenplays for The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar, The Prestige, and Memento, which scored him an Academy Award nomination along with his brother Christopher Nolan. Nolan will write, direct, and executive produce the series, with J.J. Abrams also being an executive producer. His wife Lisa Joy will write with him, and also producing is Jerry Weintraub, Bryan Burk, Kathy Lingg, Athena Wickham, and Susie Elkins.
This is not the only project that Nolan is working on for HBO, either. In addition to Westworld, Nolan is also working on an adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s classic “Foundation” book series, which is considered to be one of the all time greatest science fiction works ever created.
