For the past three seasons, Mads Mikkelsen has brilliantly played the title character in the NBC drama Hannibal. Fans have been doing all they can to save the series from coming to an end since the network announced that this would be its last season. While creator Bryan Fuller mulls over the future of the series, many of its stars have gone on to do other things. Namely Mikkelsen, who was recently confirmed to play a mysterious role in A Star Wars Story: Rogue One.
Production is taking place as we speak, but as soon as principal photography is complete for Rogue One, Mikkelsen will head right into another film. Reports are coming in that the actor is in talks to join Benedict Cumberbatch in the Scott Derrickson-directed Doctor Strange, as a villain. But which one? More on the story below.
Variety was able to confirm that Mikkelsen will play an unnamed villain in the film. At first you’d might think that Mikkelsen would play the villainous Baron Mordo. But it has been confirmed that Baron Mordo will be played by Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave), who wouldn’t be a direct adaptation of the comic book character, but rather an amalgamation of characters from the Doctor Strange mythology. Just how many villains are rolled into Mordo is still unknown. Also unknown if the villain Mikkelsen is playing will align himself with Mordo. By the looks of things, it seems as though Mordo will start off as an ally to Doctor Strange and then become a possible villain in the sequel. But expect the villain to have some sort of fantastical/magical element. He may even be playing Dormammu, a powerful mystical being who wields dark mystic energy and able to transport himself through various dimensions.
This wouldn’t be the first time that Mikkelsen has been attached to a villain role in a Marvel Studios’ film. During pre-production of Thor: The Dark World, the actor was in talks to play the dark elf Malekith. However, talks fell through, and the role ultimately went to Doctor Who‘s Christopher Eccleston.
If talks are successful, Mikkelson would also be joining Tilda Swinton, who is playing a version of the Ancient One.
Described as Marvel’s Fantasia, Doctor Strange is written by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus), and is scheduled to begin filming this fall. Marvel Studios has scheduled the film for a November 4, 2016 release.
So who do you think Mads Mikkelson is playing?
