Steven Spielberg Will “Probably” Do ‘Indiana Jones 5’ With Harrison Ford

Indiana Jones Crystal Skull Steven Spielberg Harrison Ford

Dreamworks’ Bridge Of Spies hits theaters this weekend, and director Steven Spielberg is on the press tour to help promote the film. While he could discuss Bridge and any other project he’s working — like BFG, or Ready Player One — he chose a different kind of film to talk about. During one of his interviews, Spielberg brought up Indiana Jones 5, and that he might direct it with plans to have Harrison Ford reprise his role at the title character.

More on the story below.

In an interview with Yahoo! Movies, Spielberg talked about working with the same people for numerous projects over his career, which brought up Indiana Jones 5,

Now, I’ll probably do an Indy 5 with Harrison, so then it’ll be five for Harrison [Ford], four for Tom [Hanks].

Not exactly a confirmation, but just enough to entice us. Indiana Jones is one of the most successful running film franchises to date. Since Disney acquired Lucasfilm a few years back, they have been working on pushing out Star Wars movies. But not only did they get Star Wars as a part of the deal, but they also got Indiana Jones.

However, the development of a new Indiana Jones film has been slow-going, almost as if there wasn’t going to be a sequel. Back in May, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy assured us that a new Indiana Jones movie is on the way, but they haven’t gotten a chance to work on it.

Another Indy movie “will one day be made inside this company. When it will happen, I’m not quite sure. We haven’t started working on a script yet, but we are talking about it.”

Rumors of a new Indiana Jones film started to circulate when an extremely well-done photoshop of Chris Pratt’s face superimposed on Indiana Jones’ body hit the web. This immediately put him in the running for the title role. In fact, there were rumors that Disney was looking into signing the Guardians of the Galaxy actor to play the role. Pratt even said he wouldn’t be intimidated if offered the chance to play the iconic character. But if we are to believe what Spielberg says is true, then we should consider Pratt out of the running.

2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was critically panned by both critics and audiences alike, but still managed to break box office records. Indy co-creator and long-time producer George Lucas had a hand in the last sequel, with Spielberg admitting that Lucas was behind the whole convoluted alien storyline. So, if a fifth movie does happen, it would bring Spielberg back to the director’s chair, and possibly he won’t rely on a Lucas story, and perhaps that will be the confidence the studio needs to move forward with the franchise.

It should be interesting to see what direction Spielberg takes the franchise. For one thing, it could continue the story of Dr. Henry “Indiana” Jones Jr., or it could be rebooted with Indy giving the whip and fedora to another treasure-hunting protege.

We’ll keep you posted on the story as it progresses.
