Films based on video games have had a reputation of not being very good. But when one of those film stars Oscar-nominated Michael Fassbender, it might have a chance of being entertaining. The X-Men actor will star as Callum Lynch in 20th Century Fox’s adaptation of Assassin’s Creed from director Justin Kurzel (Macbeth). While a promotional image was released a few months back (see above), the news that came with it didn’t tell us much other than the fact that the film was about to start shooting.
While this new image is nothing to get excited for either, it does give us a new look at Fassbender and co-star Ariane Labed (Before Midnight). Check it out here below.
The new image comes to us from Entertainment Weekly. It features Fassbender and Labed as their characters on a rooftop possibly scoping out their next target. The costumes are pretty detailed, and the tattoos could hold some sort of significance.
What we do know is that the film does take place in the same universe as the video games, but will be an original story that expands on the franchise’s mythology.
Here’s what Fassbender, who admits to never playing the game before until he was cast, told the magazine about how he got into character:
“I’ve played it since [being offered the job] mainly to get an idea of the physicality of the character,” Fassbender says by phone from Spain, where he was filming the adaptation. “We’re striving to find something special. We believe the whole concept around it is special and want to service that the best we can. The fans are really passionate: very specific and they expect accuracy and historical detail. We’re really trying to capitalize and feed on and enjoy the fun element. We’re working hard to make this something special.”
Kurzel also mentioned that Fassbender has being doing a lot of his own stunts. Fassbender added that he has being doing “basic fight choreography stuff.”
The film also stars Marion Cotillard, Michael K. Williams, Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson.
20th Century Fox will release Assassin’s Creed on December 21, 2016.
Assassin’s Creed follows a character by the name of Callum Lynch who, through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, is able to experience the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Knights Templar organization in the present day.
