Wait, What?! New ‘Tales From The Crypt’ Might Not Have The Crypt Keeper

Tales from the Crypt's Crypt Keeper

Remember yesterday when you were super excited about that Tales from the Crypt revival announcement? Me too! Well I hate to be the harbinger of bad news, but that super exciting revival might not be quite as exciting as you and I both hoped it would be.

Now keep in mind, this isn’t confirmed just yet, so pull me away from this ledge before I slip and hurt my everything. But Bloody-Disgusting says an insider of theirs is telling them that the Crypt Keeper himself, that dusty old corpse with a true passion for pun work, will NOT be a part of this new revival of the show.

The reason? Well, it’s nothing we haven’t heard about before. HBO, the channel that Tales from the Crypt ran on from 1989 to 1996 and would still be running on if all were right in the world, created the Crypt Keeper and still owns the rights to him. You can’t help but think of when we found out the Scream TV series wouldn’t be using the Ghostface mask.

This makes sense if you recall that all-CGI (but still awesome) remake of the show’s opening where they had to use a cheesy cardboard Crypt Keeper at the end because they didn’t have the rights to use the real character’s likeness (though watching it again now, it appears someone gave them the go ahead to throw the cacklin’ ol’ bag-o-bones in there after all).

John Kassir, who voiced the Keeper, even tweeted about how unthinkable it would be to do this show without the character:

To be perfectly fair, the Crypt Keeper we know and love isn’t an original Tales from the Crypt character. Again, he was created for the HBO anthology series—an updated cartoony animatronic twist on a character from the ’50s comic book of the same name the show was based on—which gifted viewers with a new scary story each episode. But c’mon, it’s the friggin’ Crypt Keeper! We needs him. Always.

Things do not get better from there. The Bloody-Disgusting report also indicates that instead of making the show Tales from the Crypt-style, it will be more American Horror Story-style with one consistent storyline throughout the entire 13-episode season, will not be based on the old comic book at all, and possibly will be about voodoo in New Orleans.

Once again it has to be stressed that none of this is confirmed at the moment. But if some or all of it turns out to be true, it could be a depressing return for the Crypt.

  1. Ironically ec comics owns an cryptkeeper character who is an more gonk male human character the one we remember from hbo the living desicated cropse puppet is owned by the creative staff who worked on the HBO series and the 3 films. If anything they would need to do an new puppet based on the ec art and hire kasser to voice him also to mix things up bring back the vault keeper and old witch from the other two horror comics for him to play off of like in the old comics and the new paper cuts series.

  2. Voodoo in New Orleans? Uh, that sounds vaguely like “Fat Tuesday,” the uncompleted movie from the planned ’90s Crypt trilogy that the horror ‘zines reported on back in the day (though the trilogy actually DID end at the start of the century with “Ritual,” the largely-unknown and underrated remake of “I Walked with a Zombie”). Regardless, everything you’ve reported here makes this sound simply like another addle-brained attempt to cash in on a known property (whilst simultaneously pissing off fans… yet again).
