In the first four episodes in FOX’s reboot of The X-Files, we’ve seen Roswell crashes, conspiracies, mutated children, were-monsters, and murderous statues. So call it somewhat shocking when the penultimate show in the 6-episode mini-season starts with a Homeland style terrorist attack. Two Muslim men protesting anti-Islamic art walk into a Texas gallery wearing suicide vests. This seems like the least X-Files thing to start an episode of The X-Files in the entire history of The X-Files… until immediately post credits when Mulder is showing Scully an internet video where “ear-witnesses” claim to hear trumpets from God on a random afternoon. The theme throughout this run has been the juxtaposition between the two main characters ideologies. Since 1993, Scully (Gillian Anderson) is the skeptic, grounded in science, medicine and reality. Mulder (David Duchovny) is as far out there as the truth he seeks. Scully is having trouble dealing with her past, the child she and Mulder gave up for adoption; whereas Mulder is getting to the breaking point of his sanity. If after all these years his conspiracies don’t breed true results soon, he may lose it.

Spoilers below.

Then the knock on the door.

Voice outside – “Anyone down here?”

Scully – “No one but the FBI’s most unwanted… I’ve been waiting 23 years to say that.”

Turns out it’s Agents Miller and Einstein (yes, distant relatives). They are two young FBI agents investigating the terror attack in Texas, and they share a striking resemblance to a pair of agents we first met in 1993. Miller (Robbie Amell) and Einstein (Lauren Ambrose) are dead ringers for 90s Mulder and Scully and even have the same personalities, true believer and skeptic scientist. They’re there seeking a way to speak with and gain information from one of the terrorists who is miraculously still alive, albeit in a vegetative state, and where better to find a crazy theory than The X-Files.

Things get even better when Scully calls Miller up with a scientific approach to reaching the comatose terrorist. While that’s happening, Mulder calls Einstein with a… not so scientific approach to reach the terrorist. The rest of the episode breaks the 4 into two new teams. Scully has a scientific way to tap into the brain waves of coma patients, she describes this as a personal crusade as her mother just passed and was in a coma at the end. Mulder tries talking Einstein into getting him magic mushrooms so he can expand his mind enough to communicate with those who are out of the realm of reality.

I won’t spoil too much of what is a tremendously fun and interesting episode. But suffice to say Mulder’s “trip” is one of the most fun scenes in the entire series reboot so far. And it’s what Tobey Maguire’s sad emo-strut in Spider-Man 3 should’ve been. The X-Files continues to be a breath of fresh air, strange as that air has 23 years on it. The new kids on the block (Amell & Ambrose) were terrific and held their own with Mulder and Scully… spinoff anyone.

The X-Files “Babylon” debuts Monday night, February 15th at 8:00pm ET on FOX. After that, there’s only one more episode!
