The Guardians of the Galaxy are back baby! After the wild success of James Gunn‘s first outing with the band of misfits, Gunn took to social media this morning to announce that principal photography has properly begun on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. While that might be big news, there was actually a big confirmation on a new cast member that has long been rumored to be involved with the project.
Here’s Gunn via Facebook:
My favorite movie as a small child was The Strongest Man in the World, so I’m glad to announce that, yes, Kurt Russell has joined our cast and, yes, he is more awesome a dude than I ever could have imagined.
Yep, as in Snake Plisskin, Jack Burton, Wyatt Earp, and all around awesome Kurt Russell is joining the adventures of Star-Lord and his crew. And while it’s pure speculation at this point, it has long been rumored that Russell will be playing the mysterious role of Peter “Star-Lord” Quill’s father.
Also joining the cast will be Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Chris Sullivan. They join the returning cast of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper in their Guardian roles. Michael Rooker‘s Yondu, Karen Gillan‘s Nebula, and Sean Gunn‘s Kraglin are also confirmed to be returning for Vol. 2.
For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the action, like in the first movie, is set to the soundtrack of the “Awesome Mix Vol. 2” as the crew unravels the mystery mentioned towards the end of the first film and that has to do with figuring out just who is Peter Quill’s dad that Nova Prime (Glenn Close) said was “something they haven’t seen in a very long time[sp]”.
So is Kurt Russell indeed Peter Quill’s dad? Could he be the new bad guy to protect the galaxy from? We get a good while to wait to find out as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is arriving in theaters all the way into May of 2017! Meanwhile, maybe we can harass Gunn into revealing more of his soundtrack ahead of the film. After all, the last one was a platinum-selling smash hit and even earned a Grammy nomination.
