You might have assumed that a massive disaster flick like last year’s San Andreas was one of those rare blockbusters that wouldn’t get a sequel, even if it was a hit. You underestimate Hollywood. The movie was a huge hit, making nearly half a billion dollars worldwide, and it has now been confirmed that a sequel is officially in the works.
New Line is developing the sequel, and has hired the writing duo of Neil Widener and Gavin James to work on the screenplay. Carlton Cuse penned the first movie’s screenplay based on a story by Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore. Additionally, the cast of the first movie including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, and Paul Giamatti are all expected to return for the sequel. Director Brad Peyton is also expected to return.
Here’s a description of the first movie:
After the infamous San Andreas Fault gives, triggering a magnitude 9-plus earthquake in California, a search and rescue helicopter pilot (Dwayne Johnson) and his estranged wife (Carla Gugino) make their way together from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their only daughter.
But their treacherous journey north is only the beginning. And when they think the worst may be over”¦it’s just getting started.
Looking at the first movie you’re probably wondering what a sequel to San Andreas would even be about, while also wondering how these people could be so unlucky. Unfortunately plot details aren’t being shared at the moment, but what we do know is that the movie will take things to a global scale, dealing with the Ring of Fire—an area around the Pacific Ocean where most of the world’s earthquakes and many volcanic eruptions occur, including the strongest of both.
As for when we might see the sequel, a release window for the movie has not yet been announced.
