Last time on Gotham, it looked like the end for Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz), but we know he can’t die – he’s Batman! Mazouz was a standout during the latter half of the season, with quite the game face. The monks almost sacrificed him, but he was saved at the last minute by Cat, Alfred, Jim, Bullock (Camren Bicondova, Sean Pertwee, Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue), especially Bullock with the late wheezing stair climb, and the GCPD. Silver redeemed herself (kinda) at the last minute. The fall finale was chock full of people trying to escape, but alas, for Theo Galavan (James Frain), Jim was the one who put an end to him.
Beware! Spoilers below.
Gotham 2.12 “Mr. Freeze” review: The episode opens with Jim speaking at a hearing, and Harvey Dent (Nicholas D’Agosto) doing the questioning. He gives a slightly (okay more than slightly) skewed version of the events.
Dent: “Were you involved in Theo Galavan’s murder?”
Jim: “No, I was not.”
Captain Barnes (Michael Chiklis) and Dent talk. Neither really believe Jim Gordon, but what can you do?
Who is running Gotham’s underworld? Apparently it’s Butch (Drew Powell). Tabitha (Jessica Lucas) pays him a visit, “I wanna be your partner in crime.” Selina spies this.
A cop stops a shifty guy, so he freezes her. I have been waiting for this villain! That’s the case that awaits Jim when he finally walks back in to the GCPD after the Galavan mess. No easy cases in Gotham.
Jim: “That’s it? No hug? No kiss? No ‘welcome back?’
Bullock: “You don’t deserve these lips.” I love you Harvey.
Bullock and Gordon are on the case. Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) is on it too – it’s “super cooled liquid helium.” He gets upset at Bullock for insulting him revealing a glimpse of his inner psycho. That will have to be the next big storyline. They might push it to season 3, since there’s so much other stuff going on now.
They catch Penguin, and Nygma and Jim are conflicted. Penguin covers for Jim (he always does). Barnes still doesn’t trust him though.
Mr. Fries (pronounced Fry-ess played by House of Cards‘ Nathan Darrow) goes home and talks with his dying wife, Nora. He is trying to figure out how to bring people back after freezing, so he can stop his wife’s disease. She feels bad for the “mice.”
By the way, Wayne Enterprises owns ALL the bad stuff in Gotham. But Lucius Fox says the helium place was shut down years ago.
Nygma sneakily visits Penguin and promises to visit his mother’s grave sometimes and bring lilies. Quite a quirky insane friendship these two have.
They put him in Arkham. He marks his territory. It doesn’t work with crazy people though, and they mock him. Penguin meets Dr. Strange (BD Wong). He has a soothing persuasive voice, and speaks of “rehabilitation.” Another inmate ripped out his own eyes after being told to “see no evil.” I am so looking forward to this arc.
The reanimation scene was slowly and masterfully done, and very gross as the body melts.
Dr. Freeze kills 2 snotty pharmacy guys, for refusing to refill his wife’s prescription. Harvey gets a frozen head in his windshield. That’s never a good day.
Nora finds out about the frozen people 2 minutes before Jim and Harvey show up. She is taken in.
And then the dead walk.
Gotham airs Monday nights at 8:00pm ET on FOX.
