Last week on Gotham, Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) lost it all. Nygma (Cory Michael Smith), paranoid that Jim was onto him about Ms. Kringle, set up an elaborate crime riddle which ended with a cop dead and Jim framed, convicted, and sent to prison. He told Lee (Morena Baccharin) to forget about him. Harvey (Donal Logue) vowed to find the truth. Penguin, wandered around like a simpleton for a while, until he found his real father, who took him home. Bruce and Selina (David Mazouz and Camren Bicondova) robbed a drug den, and Bruce got his ass handed to him. They escaped and he was exhilarated.

Spoilers below.

Gotham 2.16 “Prisoners” review: The title gives this episode away – Jim in prisoner blues. Time passes. How much time? A few weeks but now it’s time for gen pop at the – “World’s End,” which does not involve Simon Pegg or Nick Frost at all. Mainly it means doom for Jim.

Penguin dines with his family and Daddy makes mention of how Oswald is his only trueborn son in front of the wife and step-children. Uh-oh. His wife is messing with his meds anyway, so this happy family was unhappy way before Penguin. Penguin has nightmares. He confesses all to his father, who forgives him.”StepMommy Dearest” tries to shock his father into ousting Penguin by exposing his crimes. No deal. Then the stepsister comes on to him. Penguin doesn’t bite. I too, have wondered if Penguin is gay. he seems actually asexual. The predictable happens but not in the way you might think. Will this bring back the old Penguin who was always bubbling beneath the surface? I have to think so. And who would have thought that Penguin of all people had such loving parents?

Harvey is losing his mind about Jim, mentioning that to Nygma. Don’t do it Harvey. You’ll end up Jim’s roommate.

Harvey visits Jim with the bad news. Lee lost the baby and skipped town. Can Jim’s life get any worse?

Jim gets his ribs kicked in with a new friend (inmate)? There seems to be an okay guard in the prison too. Puck (the friend) thinks Jim is a hero. He saved Puck’s little sister from kidnappers. The Warden has it out for Jim, being a friend of ex-commissioner Loeb. Puck definitely won’t survive one episode. Come on! His motto is “Choose life.”

“Be ready.” It’s movie night,” the nice guard says. Chaos ensues. But Harvey had turned to Don Falcone for help. Yay! Falcone comes through. They plan this elaborate escape which involves a lot of knocking people out. Jim goes back for Puck, and they still manage to escape (not without notice though). Falcone offers him a choice – run or stay.

What will he choose? I think we know.

Really good episode. Some of the elements were a bit predictable (the Penguin storyline this episode, some of the prison action), but having John Doman back as Falcone brought back that father figure for Jim, that just isn’t happening with Captain Barnes. No Bruce or Arkham this episode and those elements were sorely missed, but they did have to see the Jim in prison thing through.

Gotham airs Monday nights at 8:00pm ET on FOX.

  1. Definitely loved the prison story, and had wished for more, but this show does have major problems with priorities and pacing and focus v. random need to include random characters… just because, at the loss to the primary. All things considered, it was as much and as good as we were going to get and Ben McK rocked it as I knew he would when he finally got some emotional material to milk. Who needs dialogue when he has the chance to communicate non-verbally and things slow down enough to let us see it? The Jim and Harvey, Jim and Puck and Jim and the guard as his advocate were all great. Ben McK and John Doman are always fantastic and so underused together. ITA re: the connection to Jim’s father and father figure bond and how it has never worked with Barnes at all. That has been a forced attempt that has failed repeatedly with how Barnes has both manipulated and undermined Jim, but continued to use him for his own ends. I’d welcome much more with Jim and Falcone, simply to see Ben McK and John Doman together, just as I’d like to see a stable relationship for Jim and Lee, just like Jim and Harvey, amidst all the turmoil. Nicely done.
