With Spider-Man set to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Captain America: Civil War, Marvel Studios can finally turn its attention to shaping the Webslinger into the hero that fans have been longing for. For those who have already seen the film, including myself, Tom Holland has demonstrated why he is the perfect man for the role. Since Sony has decided to share the character with Marvel, fans have been interested in seeing what will become of the character and what his place will be in the MCU despite a majority of the film rights being under Sony’s ownership.

Now there is a bit of news that reveals what Marvel’s role is in cultivating the character and who the villain may be in the reboot – which is rumored to be titled Spider-Man: Homecoming. Check out the full story below.

First, Marvel Studios’ role in creating a new shared Spider-Man. Collider reports that Marvel will be creative producers on the reboot. This falls along the lines of what has been reported when the deal to share the character was made back in 2015. We knew that Kevin Feige would be co-producing the reboot with his expert team at Marvel and former Sony Pictures’ Chairman Amy Pascal. Here’s what he told the site:

“We’re working very much [together]. It is a”” I don’t know exactly what the credits will be, but it is a Sony Pictures production of a Marvel Studios film. The agreement was that it is very much a Sony Pictures movie. Amy Pascal is co-producing it with us and [Sony Chairman] Tom Rothman is leading the charge for Sony and that we are the creative producers. We are the ones hiring the actor, introducing him in this film, and then working right now on the script and soon to be shooting the actual Spidey film.”

The reboot is still in the very early stages of pre-production, with Holland, Marisa Tomei, and Zendeya the only cast in the Jon Watts directed-film. But from what has been reported, it won’t be an origins story. It will, however, “allude to those events” that helped him make him the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Feige added the film will be “much more focused on his future and how he continues to grow and have a steep learning curve after, certainly, the adventure he had in Civil War on how to be his own hero.”

Turning our attention to the villain, it is being rumored that the main villain will be The Vulture. Adrian Toomes is an elderly fellow who possesses a winged suit not too far off from what Falcon wears. Birth.Death.Movies was the first to discover the news while on the floors of CinemaCon in Las Vegas. They add that Toomes may have a non-main villain role. This wouldn’t be the first time that the Vulture was named as a possible villain for a Spider-Man film. Before Sam Raimi walked out on Spider-Man 4, the director was exploring the possibility of having Vulture as the villain of his film. However, due to a disagreement with Avi Arid, that never happened.

Written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein (Vacation, Horrible Bosses), Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to open in theaters on July 28, 2017.
