For three seasons, the best comedy on network TV is NOT the one you’re thinking of. It’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The co-creators, Michael Schur and Daniel J. Goor have impressive resumes, which include The Office (British version) and Parks and Recreation, and the series won the 2014 Golden Globe for Best Comedy. What separates Nine-Nine from other ensemble comedies, is that while some actors lead and others support, the comedy burdens are distributed equally and there is no weak link. If you like your humor in your face and crazy, there’s Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and Terry (Terry Crews). Sarcastic and insulting, there’s Gina (Chelsea Peretti). Dry and straight laced, Captain Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher) and Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz). Now completing their third season, the show exits to one of its best episodes. Rosa’s fiance is in hiding because the mob is after him, and there’s an FBI agent working with the gangsters. Captain Holt’s long time friend Bob Anderson (Dennis Haysbert) was outed as that agent.

Spoilers below.

There is barely time to type this as I’m literally tearing up while laughing. When discussing options of where Bob could’ve taken Holt, Jake’s suggestions include an index card factory or an accounting museum… turns out they’re still in the hospital. Even Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker) and Scully (Joel McKinnon-Miller) prove their worth, even if it’s driving like absolute maniacs or licking chocolate smudges off the walls.

While Peralta, Rosa, and the idiots search the hospital for chocolate smudges, Gina and Terry are trying to get there in time, and Charles and Amy (Joe Lo Truglio, Melissa Fumero) are traveling first class from Texas, where Amy was undercover in prison trying to get info out of the mob boss’s sister. Holt meanwhile, is being taken to the roof where he pleads for his life the only way Holy knows how…

“When I die please send Kevin my regards.” – Holt
“What should I tell him?” – Bob
“Regards.” – Holt

Soon the combined “smarts” of the officers overwhelms Bob (with Gina cheering). Now they have to get Bob out of the hospital, while avoiding the gangsters he called for backup. Terry and Jake wheel Bob around dressed as hospital staff with Terry screaming Grey’s Anatomy lines; “I feel like Sandra Oh!” Meanwhile, while they distract the mob guys, Holt escorts Bob and Gina out passed security in straightjackets. Bob is of course telling the truth about being an FBI agent, but Gina screaming about being Serena Williams wins the day.

“Call the FBI!” – Bob
“No! Call Venus! – Gina

They hop over to Rosa’s secret apartment where cold, emotionless, weapons-loving Rosa is renting under the name Emily Goldfinch, lighting aroma candles, and putting lemons in a vase for color… This of course triggers massive questions from her fellow Nine-Niners, especially Terry. The gang pulls a phenomenal final ruse on Bob to capture the secret file with info on gangster, Figgis. The highlight is the ultimately straight laced Captain Holt joining Peralta for an amazing monosyllabic version of “Funky Cold Medina.”

“Ask the guy why you so fly…” – Jake
“He said Funky Cold Medina” – Holt
“Funky Cold Medina” – Both

Before they can celebrate too hard, they pull a hilarious set-up for season 4 and I cannot wait.

Season 3 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine was as consistently funny as any show I’ve watched on network TV since Seinfeld. Brooklyn Nine-Nine returns to FOX this September for season 4. Catch up now on Amazon Prime, or FOX On Demand.
